He went on this journey after meeting Baiba Kelley, a local woman of Latvian descent who yearned to again hear the music of her native country.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_151910\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/APSU-3rd-Annual-Holiday-Dinner-December-1st-1.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-151910\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-151910\" title=\"APSU 3rd Annual Holiday Dinner December 1st\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/APSU-3rd-Annual-Holiday-Dinner-December-1st-1-480x402.jpg\" alt=\"APSU 3rd Annual Holiday Dinner December 1st\" width=\"480\" height=\"402\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-151910\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">APSU 3rd Annual Holiday Dinner December 1st<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more-->\u201cMuch of her family moved here during World War II, and I was literally going over there to find music of her uncle\u2019s,\u201d Foster said.<\/p>\n<p>While searching for Latvian music both in and out of the United States, Foster came across a piece titled \u201cBalts Sniedzins,\u201d a holiday carol that translates to \u201cA Gentle Snow is on the Ground.\u201d At 7:00pm on December 1st, the APSU choral program will perform this piece for Kelley and the local community during the APSU Music Department\u2019s third annual Holiday Dinner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is my distinct pleasure to have the women singers perform this Latvian choral piece at this year\u2019s dinner,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The annual Holiday Dinner event is a formal, sit-down dinner in the Morgan University Center Ballroom, featuring APSU choral members performing holiday works in English, Latvian, Hebrew and Latin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a highlight of the music department\u2019s year,\u201d Foster said. \u201cAnd there\u2019s music for people that celebrate Christmas, people who celebrate Chanukah, people who celebrate Kwanza and people who just want to be around friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the Latvian piece, the program will feature holiday works by APSU music professor emeritus Dr. George Mabry, APSU professor of music Dr. Jeffrey Wood, and APSU alumnus Zach Pentecost, as well as a modern variation of \u201cJingle Bells\u201d and Renaissance carols by the Dutch composer Jan Sweelinck.<\/p>\n<p>The evening will end on a soft, subdued note when APSU assistant professor of violin Dr. Emily Crane joins the choir for a special performance.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets for the dinner are $50.00, but only 300 spots are available.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, or to purchase tickets, contact Foster at 931.221.7002 or <a href=\"mailto:fosterk@apsu.edu\">fosterk@apsu.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Clarksville, TN &#8211; In the summer of 2010, Dr. Korre Foster, Austin Peay State University assistant professor of music, traveled to the eastern European country of Latvia in search of choral music.
