Previous winners include such noted authors as Richard Bausch, Barbara Kingsolver and Geraldine Brooks.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, the Library presented its 2012 Emyl Jenkins Sexton Literary Award for Fiction to another esteemed writer \u2013 Austin Peay State University\u2019s 2012-13 Acuff Chair of Excellence recipient David Huddle.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_149693\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/David-Huddle.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-149693\" class=\"size-full wp-image-149693\" title=\"David Huddle\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/David-Huddle.jpg\" alt=\"David Huddle\" width=\"350\" height=\"228\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-149693\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">David Huddle<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more-->Huddle received the award for his 10th and most recent work of fiction, the novel \u201cNothing Can Make Me Do This.\u201d At 8:00pm on November 8th, he will read from this novel at the APSU Morgan University Center, Room 303.<\/p>\n<p>Huddle, a two-time National Endowment of the Arts Fellow, is spending a few months in Clarksville this fall and again next spring as the holder of the 2012-13 Acuff Chair of Excellence. In 1985, country music legend Roy Acuff generously endowed the chair at APSU, which brings nationally acclaimed artists to campus each year to work with students and the community.<\/p>\n<p>Huddle is the author of more than 17 books of poetry, fiction and essays, and his work has appeared in publications such as The New Yorker, Esquire, Harper\u2019s Magazine, The New York Times Magazine and the Best American Short Stories. A Publisher\u2019s Weekly review of his debut novel, \u201cThe Story of a Million Years,\u201d stated that Huddle\u2019s \u201cview of the human condition brims with wisdom, compassion and a rare grace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He previously served as distinguished visiting professor of creative writing at Hollins University, which offers one of the country\u2019s premier Master of Fine Arts programs, in addition to being on the faculty of the famed Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury College.<\/p>\n<p>Judges for this year\u2019s Emly Jenkins Sexton Literary Award for Fiction commented that Huddle\u2019s novel, \u201cNothing Can Make Me Do This,\u201d was written with \u201ccompelling honesty, humor and grace.\u201d Noted writer Julia Alvarez said the novel \u201cgives us not just a glimpse, but that rare revelatory and redeeming experience of seeing and becoming\u201d the characters in the book, \u201cwhich is why we read and need novels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the November 8th reading, which is free and open to the public, Huddle also plans to read works from his new poetry collection, \u201cBlack Snake at the Family Reunion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the spring semester, he will deliver another reading at APSU from his non-fiction work.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on the reading or this year\u2019s Acuff Chair of Excellence, contact the APSU Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts at 931.221.7876.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Clarksville, TN &#8211; Every autumn, the Library of Virginia honors some of the nation\u2019s top writers with its annual Virginia Literary Awards.
