{"id":12675,"date":"2012-10-02T08:00:12","date_gmt":"2012-10-02T13:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/?p=12675"},"modified":"2012-10-01T23:09:05","modified_gmt":"2012-10-02T04:09:05","slug":"austin-peay-state-university-spanish-language-journal-now-has-print-edition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/2012\/10\/02\/austin-peay-state-university-spanish-language-journal-now-has-print-edition\/","title":{"rendered":"Austin Peay State University Spanish language journal now has print edition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-47306\" title=\"Austin Peay State University\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/apsu-logo-200x123.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Peay State University\" width=\"200\" height=\"123\" \/><strong>Clarksville, TN<\/strong> &#8211; Two years ago, Dr. Osvaldo DiPaolo, Austin Peay State University assistant professor of languages and literature, decided the University needed a Spanish language journal that catered to Hispanic literature.<\/p>\n<p>He thought it would be a hard sell since APSU had a relatively small Spanish program, so he suggested creating an online-only journal to keep costs down.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Polifonia.gif\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-137913\" title=\"Polifonia\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Polifonia-480x183.gif\" alt=\"Polifonia\" width=\"480\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<!--more-->In the fall of 2011, the first issue of Polifon\u00eda appeared online at <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apsu.edu\/polifonia.\" >www.apsu.edu\/polifonia.<\/a> The website was professional looking and contained several peer-reviewed essays, but in the academic world, an online journal can easily be ignored.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Dr. David Guest (chair of the APSU Department of Languages and Literature) suggested that we see if we can get it in print,\u201d DiPaolo said. \u201cMy eyes got big, and I said, \u2018OK.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Dixie Webb, the dean of the APSU College of Arts and Letters, provided DiPaolo with a budget for the journal, and last week, 100 copies of Polifon\u00eda, Volume 2, arrived on campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a dream come true,\u201d DiPaolo said. \u201cWe\u2019ve had such support from the department and the college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DiPaolo serves as the journal\u2019s editor and his colleague, Dr. Nadina Olmedo, from Campbellsville University, is as the associate editor. Polifon\u00eda\u2019s editorial board includes two APSU faculty members \u2013 Dr. Miguel Ru\u00edz Avil\u00e9s and Dr. Culley Carson-Grefe \u2013 along with professors from the University of Birmingham, England, the Universidad Nacional de la Patagonia, Argentina, the Universidad de Granada, Spain, the Universidad Veracruzana, Mexico, the University of Kentucky and the University of Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p>For this new issue, which focuses on gothic elements in Hispanic literature and film, the editors invited guest experts from Hungary, Mexico and Spain to help choose the 10 best essays out of dozens of submissions. When scholars from around the world read those essays for their own research, they\u2019ll find the APSU logo on the front of each journal.<\/p>\n<p>[320left]That recognition, DiPaolo said, is important for the growth of the Spanish program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe whole intention was to get our name out,\u201d he said. \u201cIt makes us look better from the outside, and it can bring potential students who are interested. Our goal is to have a master\u2019s degree in Spanish, and I think that by having something like this will bring us up to that level.
