The sleek, fierce-looking creatures were hungry and looking for food.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, they ignored her, but what\u2019s most astounding about this incident is that Eilperin, a national environmental reporter for the Washington Post, jumped into the swarm on purpose. She was writing an article on the sharks for the newspaper and, like all great journalists, needed to see them first hand.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_136662\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Juliet-Eilperin-headshot.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-136662\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-136662\" title=\"Juliet Eilperin author of &quot;Demon Fish: Travels through the Hidden World of Sharks.&quot;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Juliet-Eilperin-headshot-480x319.jpg\" alt=\"Juliet Eilperin author of &quot;Demon Fish: Travels through the Hidden World of Sharks.&quot;\" width=\"480\" height=\"319\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-136662\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Juliet Eilperin author of &#8220;Demon Fish: Travels through the Hidden World of Sharks.&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more-->\u201cThe initial few times were pretty scary, but what I learned quickly was we\u2019re an afterthought,\u201d she said. \u201cThey\u2019re intent on eating other things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her fear quickly developed into a fascination, taking her around the world, from South Africa to Shanghai, to swim with the long-feared creatures. What began as an assignment for the Washington Post quickly morphed into an acclaimed new book, \u201cDemon Fish: Travels through the Hidden World of Sharks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At 2:00pm on October 6th, Eilperin will visit the Customs House Museum and Cultural Center for a free reading and book signing. The event is part of the Austin Peay State University Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts\u2019 Autumn Salon Series. The Center hosts the Salon Series once a month, featuring distinguished artists, writers and arts organizations, followed by refreshments and good conversations.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Demon-Fish-Cover.jpg\"  class=\"thickbox no_icon\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-136664\" title=\"Demon Fish: Travels through the Hidden World of Sharks\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Demon-Fish-Cover-313x480.jpg\" alt=\"Demon Fish: Travels through the Hidden World of Sharks\" width=\"219\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a>\u201cFor anyone who loves Shark Week, Juliet\u2019s reading is a must,\u201d Christopher Burawa, director of the APSU Center of Excellence, said. \u201cBut Juliet reports beyond the sensationalizing of sharks. Few writers have the talent that Juliet does in assembling research with experience. Anyone who loves nature should treat themselves and come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eilperin\u2019s book, meant for a broad, general audience, serves as a fascinating travelogue that explores the human race\u2019s long cultural relationship with sharks. To do that, the journalist first had to challenge her own preconceived notions about these creatures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re not all gunning to get us underwater,\u201d she said. \u201cThere are just really interesting things, like how certain sharks are filter feeders, like whale sharks, and they couldn\u2019t bite us if they wanted to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eilperin\u2019s research took her not only to tropical bays and islands around the world, but also to libraries and community archives looking for folk tales and other stories about sharks.<\/p>\n<p>[320right]\u201cIt was really interesting getting a sense of how humans view them differently over time,\u201d she said. \u201cAn island culture from thousands of years ago may have a very different idea (of sharks) than someone who has seen \u2018Jaws.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Los Angeles Times referred to \u201cDemon Fish\u201d as a \u201ccompelling book: Its author not only knows all about her subject but she knows how readers think about it\u2026the main impression left by \u2018Demon Fish\u2019 is that sharks are indeed all they are cracked up to be \u2013 and more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A review in The New York Times also praised the book, warning that by \u201cthe end of \u2018Demon Fish,\u2019 readers may be tempted to don a wet suit and go hug a shark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eilperin is also the author of \u201cFight Club Politics: How Partisanship is Poisoning the House of Representatives,\u201d which has been featured on NPR\u2019s \u201cFresh Air with Terry Gross\u201d and Comedy Central\u2019s \u201cThe Daily Show with Jon Stewart.\u201d She is also a contributor to \u201cThe Princeton Reader: Contemporary Essays by Writers and Journalists at Princeton University\u201d and \u201cDeadlock: The Inside Story of America\u2019s Closest Election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For more information on the October 6th salon, contact the Center at 931.221.7876.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Clarksville, TN &#8211; In the summer of 2005, Juliet Eilperin jumped into the Atlantic Ocean and found herself surrounded by sharks.
