\"AustinClarksville, TN<\/strong> – When Darlene Howell, coordinator of the Austin Peay State University Military Student Center, was called out of her office on Wednesday afternoon, she was a bit confused. Why were there so many people \u2013 including APSU President Tim Hall \u2013 gathered in the Center, watching her every move?<\/p>\n

But then Bob Beaty, a volunteer with the Department of Defense\u2019s Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), stepped forward to clear things up by presenting Howell with an award.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s called the Patriot Award. It recognizes Darlene Howell,\u201d he said, reading from the award, \u201cwith Austin Peay State University, as a patriotic employer for contributing to national security and protecting liberty and freedom by supporting employee participation in America\u2019s National Guard and Reserve Force.\u201d<\/p>\n

Howell smiled bashfully as those gathered in the packed room applauded and cheered her recognition. Beaty presented her with a certificate, and President Hall handed her a Patriot lapel pin.<\/p>\n

\u201cDarlene, we\u2019re proud of you,\u201d Hall said.<\/p>\n

The ESGR is a Department of Defense organization, established in 1972 to promote cooperation and understanding between Reserve component members and their civilian employers and to assist in the resolution of conflicts arising from an employee’s military commitment.<\/p>\n
