{"id":10808,"date":"2012-04-18T04:30:19","date_gmt":"2012-04-18T09:30:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/?p=10808"},"modified":"2012-04-18T00:13:49","modified_gmt":"2012-04-18T05:13:49","slug":"apsu-provost-lecture-series-to-focus-on-songs-of-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.discoverclarksville.com\/articles\/2012\/04\/18\/apsu-provost-lecture-series-to-focus-on-songs-of-war\/","title":{"rendered":"APSU Provost Lecture Series to focus on Songs of War"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Austin Peay State University<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-47306\" title=\"Austin Peay State University\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarksvilleonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/apsu-logo-200x123.jpg\" alt=\"Austin Peay State University\" width=\"200\" height=\"123\" \/><strong>Clarksville, TN<\/strong> &#8211; The challenges composers might face in memorializing war in their music will be one of the topics explored in the final installment of the Provost Lecture Series at Austin Peay State University.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Jeffrey Wood, professor of music at APSU, will present \u201cSongs of War: Expressing the Inexpressible\u201d at 3:00pm, Thursday, April 19th in the Morgan University Center, Room 103. The event is free and open to the public.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis presentation will be on the response of the \u2018classical\u2019 composer to war \u2014 from the American Civil War to the present,\u201d Wood said. \u201cComposers such as Elgar, Britten, Copland and others will be presented. With April 19th being Yom HaShoah, which is Holocaust Day in the Hebrew calendar, musical responses to the Holocaust will also be discussed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, his presentation will explore the challenges confronting composers in commemorating and memorializing war in their music.<\/p>\n<p>Wood&#8217;s compositions have been performed throughout the country and have received many awards including those from BMI, ASCAP and the Stroud Festival Competition in England. He was named Distinguished Composer of the Year by the MTNA and was included in the &#8220;The Art Song Collection&#8221; competition sponsored by G. Schirmer\/AMP. His oratorio \u201cLamentations of Jeremiah\u201d was premi\u00e8red in 1999 and subsequently nominated for the Pulitzer Prize.<\/p>\n<p>As a pianist Wood has worked with composers as Roger Sessions and Ernst K\u0159enek in performances of their keyboard music. He is a past recipient of the Hawkins Award for creativity and has held the Artist Fellowship in Composition from the Tennessee Arts Commission.<\/p>\n<p>The Provost Lecture Series seeks to foster a spirit of intellectual and scholarly inquiry among faculty, staff and students. The program will be used as a platform for APSU faculty members who are recent recipients of provost summer grants, who have been awarded faculty development leaves and who have engaged in recent scholarly inquiry during sabbatical leaves.<\/p>\n<p>APSU faculty members with recent research of acclaim also will be given a platform within this series.
