Clarksville Civil War Roundtable’s next meeting is March 20th, 2013

The 108th meeting.

Clarksville, TN – The next meeting of the Clarksville (TN) Civil War Roundtable will be on Wednesday, March 20th, 2013 at the Bone & Joint Center, 980 Professional Park Drive, right across the street from Gateway Hospital. This is just off Dunlop Lane and Holiday Drive and only a few minutes east of Governor’s Square mall.

The meeting begins at 7:00pm and is always open to the public. Members please bring a friend or two – new recruits are always welcomed.

Austin Peay Downtown Gallery presents the exhibit “Collective II”

Clarksville, TN – A new exhibit at the Austin Peay Downtown Gallery this month will highlight of the work of APSU alumnus Young Kim and APSU art instructor Becky Hall. The exhibit, “Collective II,” will open with a reception from 5:00pm to 8:00pm on February 7th, and it will run through March 2nd.

Kim, a native of South Korea, is an associate professor of art at Elon University in North Carolina. He received his Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Kentucky and his Bachelor of Fine Arts from APSU. His work has been exhibited extensively at numerous galleries, including the Second Street Gallery in Charlottesville, VA, the Hun Gallery in New York City and Causey Contemporary in Brooklyn.

APSU Provost Lecture Series to discuss Axis POWs

Clarksville, TN – An Austin Peay State University history faculty member whose research focuses on prisoners of war (POW) will talk about the Axis POWs held in the U.S. during World War II as part of the next Provost Lecture Series at APSU.

Dr. Antonio Thompson, associate professor of history, will present at 3:00pm, Thursday, November 15th in the Morgan University Center, Room 303. All sessions of the Provost Lecture Series are free and open to the public. [Read more]

Hazelwood Elementary School Principal Selected

Montgomery County, TN – Clarksville-Montgomery County Director of Schools Mike Harris today announced that Mason Bellamy, Ed.D. will serve as principal of Hazelwood Elementary.

He replaces Rosanne Sanford who was named principal of the Carmel Elementary, which opens in August 2012.

Dr. Bellamy has served as assistant principal at West Creek Elementary for the past year and a half and has five years teaching experience at Sango Elementary. He earned his doctorate in education from Trevecca Nazarene University where he also earned his Master’s in teaching. He completed his B.A. in political science at the University of Kentucky.

Hazelwood, located on Tiny Town Road, serves 800 students.

New book by APSU professor examines crime fiction and society in Argentina

Clarksville, TN – On a warm, sunny day in Argentina, a wealthy woman known as Yiya Murano invited three of her close friends over for some tea. The women sat down for a pleasant afternoon of conversation, not realizing that Murano had added a good amount of poison to the powdered cookies she was serving. By the next day, all three women were dead.

Investigators quickly learned that Murano was operating a ponzi scheme. Her friends had trusted her with their investments, but she ended up losing all their money. Rather than admitting her mistakes, she bought some cyanide and then made a friendly invitation for an afternoon of tea and cookies. [Read more]

Fort Campbell Federal Awards Scholarships

Fort Campbell Federal Credit Union awarded college scholarships to six student members totaling up to $10,000 each.

The Credit Union Scholarship Program was established to help graduating high school seniors pursue higher educations. The scholarships will be used to gain trade certification, undergraduate or associates degrees. Each scholarship will be paid directly to the school at a level of $1,250 per semester for up to eight semesters.
