Dr. Sergei Markov, associate professor in the APSU Department of Biology, will speak at 3:00pm, Thursday, February 9th in the Morgan University Center, Room 303. The event is free and open to the public.

The title of his talk is “Conformational regulation of hydrogenase gene expression in algae.”

Markov will present will present data that had demonstrated the relationship between conformation of hydrogenase gene and its function in green microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. Hydrogenase gene in the oxygen-free environment activates algal production of hydrogen gas, which is one of the potential energy carriers of the future.

The research showed that a loop conformation exists in the hydrogenase gene when algal cells are exposed to oxygen and the hydrogenase gene is inactive. In contrast, under oxygen-free conditions, when hydrogenase gene is active, no loop conformation in the gene region is present.

The data obtained in this project may have various applications in the area of biofuel production from microscopic algae. Better understanding of the regulation of algal genes will help to optimize generation of algal biofuels and in particularly hydrogen.

Markov joined the biology faculty of APSU in 2006. He received his Ph.D. in microbiology from Lomonosov Moscow State University, where he started his research on biofuels. From 1991 until 1995, he worked in England at King’s College London and Ecotec, Research and Consulting. Later, he was invited to the U.S. to join the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) of the U.S. Department of Energy in Golden, CO, where he worked for several years.

His biofuel research is supported by several grants from the National Science Foundation and the Environmental Protection Agency. He is author of more than 70 research publications on biofuels and a patent for hydrogen production by cyanobacteria.

As a result, his work has appeared in a dozen of publications on the Internet, including Science Daily, and on several foreign news websites.

Other sessions in the Provost Lecture Series also are planned for the academic year. All sessions are from 3:00pm-4:30pm in the MUC, Room 303 (unless noted otherwise) and include the following:

February 16th: Cynthia Marsh, professor of art
February 23rd: Dr. Christine Mathenge, associate professor of geology

Dr. Marsha Lyle-Gonga, assistant professor of political science, will discuss her work about the symposium from 3:00pm-4:30pm, Thursday, January 26th in the Morgan University Center, Room 303. All presentations in the Provost Lecture Series are free and open to the public.

Lyle-Gonga used a stipend awarded from the University’s Summer Research Faculty Program to fund the symposium, held in May 2011 on the main campus. The two-day seminar was designed to increase the political efficacy of young women ages 18-24 through leadership development and civic engagement activities. Participants were taught a series of courses on basic leadership styles and development and assigned a service-learning project.

The second day of the seminar, the women worked on their assigned community service project at local nonprofit agencies. They presented their work at the end of the session.

In addition, women in leadership and nonprofit service organizations were invited as guest speakers to reflect on their own leadership development and provide service-learning opportunities.

Lyle-Gonga has been teaching political science courses, both on site and online, at APSU since 1998. Prior to joining the full-time faculty ranks in 2010, she was the director of APSU’s High School Upward Bound (HSUB) federally funded program for eight years. Before serving as HSUB’s administrator, she was an academic counselor in Student Support Services on campus.

Her research interests range from areas of political behavior in women and youth to public policy issues, specifically those in education and immigration. She earned a doctorate in public policy and administration from Walden University in Minneapolis, MN, master’s in urban administration from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and bachelor’s in political science from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio.

Dr. Ann Silverberg, professor of music, will present “The Chinese Guzheng: Old and New” from 3:00pm-4:30pm, Thursday, January 19th in the Morgan University Center, Room 303. All presentations in the Provost Lecture Series are free and open to the public.

The Chinese “table harp” or guzheng is a musical instrument that has been in use in China for more than 2,000 years.

“In the 20th century, its cultural role has been revised and its music updated to suit modern times and modern ears,” Silverberg said. Today, tens of thousands of young urban Chinese learn to play the guzheng, and the instrument’s popularity extends to Chinese communities around the world.”

A musicologist/ethnomusicologist, Silverberg has taught at APSU for the past 17 years. Her primary research interests are the music of China, liturgical music, American music and women in music. Her recent writings include a chapter on Chinese music in “China,” edited by Robert A. LaFleur in AB-Clio’s “Asia in Focus Series” (2010) and a chapter on Catholic liturgical music reform in “Renewal and Resistance: Catholic Church Music from the 1850s to Vatican II” (published by Paul Henry Lang, 2010), edited by Paul Collins. Articles on Beijing opera and on Marian MacDowell have been accepted for publication in Education About Asia and the The Musical Quarterly, respectively.

Silverberg has served as interim chair of APSU’s Department of Music (2003-05) and is a longtime member of the Board of Directors of the Clarksville Community Concert Association. Her educational background includes master’s degrees in library science and anthropology as well as the doctorate in musicology. She spent academic 2007-08 in residence at the Shenyang Conservatory of Music, Shenyang, China. Silverberg is currently president elect of the College Music Society’s Southern Chapter.

Ellen Smyth, instructor of mathematics at Austin Peay State University, said although sharing content is only a click away, the question goes from “Why would we share?” to “Why would we not share?”

“And that is without any external pressure,” she said. “Leaders of the open education movement are now calling for external pressure – a handful of national policies that could change the face of education forever and, in my opinion, for the better.”

Smyth will explore this movement and ways APSU can leverage open educational resources to save students money at the first Provost Lecture Series talk for 2012. In particular, she will appraise the largest open textbook platform, FlatWorld Knowledge, which currently houses many business texts and soon will house textbooks for all popular core classes.

Her presentation, titled “An Open CourseWare Quest,” will be from 3:00pm-4:30pm, Thursday, January 12th in the Morgan University Center, Room 303. All presentations in the Provost Lecture Series are free and open to the public.

In 2010, Smyth was named the University’s Innovative Professor, an honor given by the Center for Extended and Distance Education. In 2011, she received a summer research fellowship for exploratory work in Open CourseWare, an initiative to develop online textbooks and multimedia learning content that students can access for free.

Smyth has given one invited webinar, “What Students Want,” through Strayer University’s Center for Teaching and Learning. She also has had three articles published and has made several conference presentations throughout the U.S.

Other sessions in the Provost Lecture Series also are planned for the academic year. All sessions are from 3:00pm-4:30pm in the MUC, Room 303 (unless noted otherwise) and include the following:

January 19th: Dr. Ann Silverberg, professor of music
In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, of the fall-related deaths that occurred in 2008, 82 percent of them were in adults 65 and older.

A more alarming fact than this is that older age groups sustain more fall-related injuries than younger age groups. In other words, adults older than 85 are more likely to sustain a fall, compared with those who are 65-74 years old.

One of the most noticeable changes is a decreased stride length, which causes older adults to shuffle their feet as they walk, Leszczak said.

In an effort to improve stride length and overall strength in a group of older adults, Leszczak created a high velocity resistance-training program for a group of 10 older adults in two local independent/dependent living facilities in Clarksville. The program lasted for 12 weeks, from July to October, and the participants exercised three times per week using various types of exercise equipment, such as medicine balls, weighted vests and ankle weights.

Leszczak will share the outcomes of this program at the next Provost Lecture Series. He will present “Improving Function and Strength in Community Dwelling Older Adults Through High Velocity Resistance Training” from 3:00pm-4:30pm, Thursday, December 1st in the Morgan University Center, Room 303. All presentations in the Provost Lecture Series are free and open to the public.

With research interests in physical performance in aging adults, Leszczak previously taught as a graduate assistant at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. He is an instructor for a personal trainer workshop offered through the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America and holds memberships with the American College of Sports Medicine and the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America. In May 2010, Leszczak earned his doctoral degree, along with two certificates – one in gerontology and the other in educational statistics and research methods – from the University of Arkansas, where he also received his master’s degree in exercise science. His bachelor’s degree in accounting is from Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ.

“In a time of such economic volatility, the arts are often overlooked as frivolous and less practical than other academic and technical skill areas, but frankly, the arts are a good investment for a community, a university and a family,” said Darren Michael, associate professor of acting and directing at Austin Peay State University.

Michael will discuss this topic in more detail as part of the next Provost Lecture Series. He will present “The Theatrical Stoplight: The Arts as an Educational, Social and Economic Cornerstone to the Community” from 3:00pm-4:30pm, Thursday, November 17th in the Morgan University Center, Room 303.
Michael has been working as an actor and director in collegiate, community and professional theater over the Southeast for nearly 20 years. In addition to his teaching duties, he is the coordinator of APSU’s Theater and Dance program.

He holds a Master of Fine Arts in performance from the University of Southern Mississippi and a Bachelor of Arts in theater from Ouachita Baptist University. Michael is also on the board of the Tennessee Theatre Association and the Tennessee representative for the Southeastern Theatre Conference.

Instead, a complex set of federal, state and local policies as well as agency specific mandates establish the criteria for approving parents.”

Flower will discuss this topic in more detail as part of the next Provost Lecture Series. She will present “Creating a Family: An Analysis of the Standards for Foster and Adoptive Parents” from 3:00pm-4:30pm, Thursday, November 10th in the Morgan University Center, Room 303. All presentations in the Provost Lecture Series are free and open to the public.

Three of Flower’s students – Jessica Wilson, Jessica Patmore and Olivia Ames – assisted Flower during the fall semester with this project.

Other sessions in the Provost Lecture Series also are planned for the academic year. All sessions are from 3:00pm-4:30pm in the MUC, Room 303 (unless noted otherwise) and include the following:

The genus Lenticulina (Lamarck) has a long a complex history with numerous name changes and definitions. In addition, many often poorly defined species have been assigned to the genus. The result is a confusing mass of names and variations, complicating any attempt to understand the evolutionary history of the genus and the interplay between morphologic variation, abundance and evolution.

Frederick’s research has several interrelated goals: to clarify the definition of the genus and the number of species within it, to discuss the degree of variation of both morphology and abundance in this long-ranging taxon and to examine the relationships between variation, species duration and environment in shaping the evolutionary history of the genus Lenticulina.

However, invasive species are not a new problem; historically, they have been transported to different geographical locations around the globe.

Freshwater and marine ecosystems are easily accessible areas that allow for invasive hitchhikers to reach a new geographical area either deliberately or unintentionally. This will be the focus of the next Provost Lecture Series at Austin Peay State University.

Angelina D. Fowler, an adjunct instructor in the APSU Center of Excellence for Field Biology, will present “Homogenization of Earth: Impacts of Invasive Species in Freshwater Ecosystems” from 3:00pm-4:30pm, Thursday, October 27th in the Morgan University Center, Room 303. All presentations in the Provost Lecture Series are free and open to the public.

Fowler said through exponential human population growth and technology, the spread of invasive species will never subside.

“International trade, in particular, allows these organisms to be transferred across the world, surpassing geographical barriers that they have been isolated from for millions of years,” she said.

Fowler also will discuss a brief preliminary synopsis of her thesis research over the effects of an invasive aquatic plant on macroinvertebrate communities in the Obed Wild and Scenic River national park.

Fowler received her B.A. in biology in 2009 from APSU, where she teaches general biology. She is a master’s candidate in biology at APSU. She also has participated in a number of studies through the Center of Excellence for Field Biology.

Other sessions in the Provost Lecture Series also are planned for the academic year. All sessions are from 3:00pm-4:30pm in the MUC, Room 303 (unless noted otherwise) and include the following:

The wet-plate collodion process was invented in 1851 in England. The process involves creating a negative on glass or metal. When the image is created on glass, the glass negative can be placed in an enlarger to make gelatin silver prints, or placed on top of a black backing, creating a one-of-a-kind positive image, called an ambrotype. When the image is made on metal (black aluminum) it is called a tintype.

“This is the process used during the Civil War by Mathew Brady and his assistants,” Bryant said. “It is a very complex process but is also very rewarding.
