Salvation Army to host Pancake Breakfast this Saturday

Clarksville, TN – The Salvation Army will host a pancake breakfast on Saturday, July 23rd, from 7:00am until 10:00am, at the James D. Amos Shelter (210 Kraft Street, Clarksville, TN). Proceeds from the breakfast will benefit Shelter operations.

Salvation Army Benefits from Comedy on the Cumberland

Stand up comedy returned to Clarksville, on Tuesday, June 7th at 7:00pm at the Roxy Regional Theatre, as F&M Bank presented “Comedy on the Cumberland”. The Clarksville Salvation Army was the beneficiary of the show. This year, Bonehead Promotions is focusing on The Clarksville Hunger Project, an awareness campaign featuring benefits for the local agencies who fight hunger in our community, because hunger is no laughing matter.
This show featured Paul Strickland, Brian Swinford, and C.J Harlow; and was hosted by local talk show host and comedian, Hank Bonecutter.

Local Convenience Store chain and Distributor to help flood victims

Local convenience store chain Sudden Service and Ajax Distributing Company are joining together in efforts to give back to local flood victims.
At any local Sudden Service convenience store, the price of Miller Lite and Coors Light 12 pack cans will be lowered to help influence greater sales. Sudden Service, Ajax Distributing and MillerCoors will each give money to the flood relief fund by each 12 pack sold, which will equal one dollar a case.
The money that is raised will go towards the Salvation Army in their current efforts of flood relief. [Read more]
Riverside Drive Re-Opens

Rivers Side Drive re-opened at 4:45pm today making the last major traffic artery in Clarksville, TN to be closed by the Great Flood of 2010 available to the public once again. The road has been the subject of intensive attention by the Tennessee Department of Transportation and the City of Clarksville’s Street Department from the moment it emerged from the receding flood waters. The road had been kept closed partially to give business owners time to remove flood debris from their businesses, and the city time to remove it from the roadside.
While the curfew in the area is no longer in effect, the Clarksville Police Department will be conducting extra Patrols along Riverside Drive to prevent looting. There were two instances of attempted looting during the flooding, one at the Rhino Mart and the other at Riverside Pro Archery.

Advisory Board Chair Jill Crow names new Salvation Army shelter to be named in honor of volunteer contractor James D. Amos
The Salvation Army officially opened the doors to its new $500,000 Kraft Street Shelter on Sunday in a ribbon-cutting ceremony that also named the facility after its volunteer contractor, James D. Amos. Amos, in a very brief statement, said he saw the need for the building, but “God was the power” in getting the job done.
Majors Grady and Shelly Pearson greeted over one hundred city and business leaders, along with the general public, gathered for tours of the building, a “dream” that became reality because of strong community support.
“Finally, Clarksville has a new shelter. It’s a blessing to the community, and there is indeed a need for this,” said Advisory Board Chairman Jill Crow in opening the dedication ceremony. “Because of all of you, dreams do come true.” [Read more]

Contractor James D. Amos joins Majors Shelly and Grady Pearson in turning the "future home" of the Salvation Army into reality
The Clarksville Salvation Army will celebrate the completion of its new Emergency Shelter on Kraft Street with an Open House on Sunday, February 22, from 1-4 p.m., with a special program at 1:30 p.m.
Clarksville Online toured the facility Thursday with Majors Grady and Shelly Pearson, and the shelter’s volunteer contractor, James Amos. The Pearsons are on their second tour in the Queen City, having been stationed here from 1997 through 2000.
Pearson said the new facility is “Phase I” of the Salvation Army’s project, noting that the new lawn in front of the building is “temporary.”
“Phase II is a church that will also be used as a multipurpose facility for the Salvation Army’s social services, children’s activities and programs, and more.” [Read more]
Used toys exempt from new product safety mandate

August 14th, 2008, former President George Bush signed and set in motion The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008. This Act was brought about by the large amount of recalled toys and baby products in the year 2007.
The CPSIA calls for any children’s product exceeding the amount of 600-ppm (parts per million) lead content cannot be sold in the United States. Items that fall under this Act are children’s toys, cribs, pacifiers, children’s jewelry, baby bouncer seats, walkers and jumpers. Any product that can be mouthed, or ingested by a child under the age of twelve must be tested for safety.
This Act will begin today. One year following this date the lead count will drop to a strict 300-ppm, then continues down to 100 ppm. This law will also prohibit against children’s items containing PVC (polyvinyl chloride ) and the chemical phthalate. [Read more]

WWJD is sometimes singled out as a standard for measuring moral beliefs and moral decisions. Perhaps we can receive spiritual motivation, too, by asking “What would the Apostles of the New Testament do?”
One Friday morning during my solitary time in fellowship with God, I read a passage of Scripture that spoke to me from Acts 4: 32-37. Verse 34 summarizes the result of corporate and united action taken by the disciples: “There was not a needy person among them.” The context sheds light on the meaning of the verse. The disciples shared their time, skills and talents as in response to God’s call. They sold their houses and land and shared everything. [Read more]
