APSU’s Center for Service-Learning & Community Engagement, campus community partner to aid national hurricane relief efforts

November 3, 2017

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – When Hurricane Maria — a Category 4 hurricane with winds up to 150 mph — ripped through the island of Puerto Rico on September 20th, 2017, the fury of Mother Nature appeared relentless, but Puerto Rico native and Austin Peay State University senior psychology major Maydaliz Bultron knew better than most that the damage left in the storm’s wake would be the true challenge for the island and its people.

“I grew up in Puerto Rico and I lived through Hurricane George (in 1998), so I understand what life is like in the wake of a storm,” Bultron said. “I remember things like not having running water and having to get ready for school in the dark with candles because the electricity had been knocked out during the storm.”

December 25, 2014

Clarksville, TN – A few weeks before Christmas; on a cold December morning, a crowd gathered at the Coldwell Banker Conroy, Marable & Holleman office on Wilma Rudolph Boulevard. 15 Families had been selected to receive a wonderful Christmas gift. One child from each family would soon be boarding the Coldwell Banker Clarksville Olde Town Trolley to shop for Christmas presents for their families.

“It’s great,” said Mark Holleman. “I think it’s fantastic. And like I said I think the agents will receive as much out of taking these kids shopping, as the kids will get out of shopping for their families.” The realtors mission was to give back to the community by ensuring that these kids and their families had a wonderful Christmas.

December 1, 2014

Reda Home BuildersClarksville TN – As you are out shopping for your families please pick up a few extra items for those who may be less fortunate this year.

Maybe a Mom or Dad lost their job. Maybe an unexpected bill came in and there’s just not as much money to provide this year.

So many of us have been single parents and know what it feels like to do without to provide for our kids. And let’s not forget all the discussions this year about downsizing at Fort Campbell and in Clarksville, we never know what the future holds for any of us.

New APSU class combines service learning with study abroad

June 6, 2014

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – On a cold, overcast morning in November, hundreds of well-dressed shoppers huddled against the wind outside a west London British Red Cross store. In America, this type of establishment is simply referred to as a thrift store, but in England, these shops tend to be a little swankier.

“What we think of as a thrift store is not really the same as their thrift stores,” Tracy Nichols, Austin Peay State University communication instructor, said. “Some of their stores are like upscale, New York boutiques.”

First Stuff the Bus campaign was a big success

December 19, 2013

Reda Home BuildersClarksville, TN – Christmas is almost here and there are still local families here in Clarksville in need of Assistance for Christmas. Local home builder Rick Reda, along with local mortgage lenders Lori Mahaffey and Rachael Rainey of Movement Mortgage, and local Realtors Diane Martin, and Joy Evers have come together to help.

The genus of the idea came from Lori Mahaffey’s 13 year old daughter Elizabeth who attends the 8th grade at West Creek Middle School. “She had come home from school and when I got home from work she started telling me about this boy she goes to school with who participates in the Project F.U.E.L. program. She wished that nobody knew about it, so that they wouldn’t make fun of him.”
