Clarksville Writers’ Conference 2012: Renaissance Woman Alice Randall Describes Ada’s Rules

July 2, 2012

Clarksville Writer's ConferenceClarksville, TN – Harvard-educated Alice Randall is as close to being a Renaissance woman as you’re going to meet on the streets of Nashville. Writer-in-residence for Vanderbilt University, she is the author of The Wind Done Gone, Pushkin and the Queen of Spades, Rebel Yell and her latest book, Ada’s Rules. The first African-American woman to write a number one country song, she also wrote a video of the year, worked on multiple Johnny Cash videos, and produced a pilot for a prime time drama on CBS (featuring ex-wives of country stars).

Ada’s Rules hits head on what Alice Randall feels is the dominant civil rights issue of the first quarter of the 21st century—health disparity, specifically the issue of being overweight that leads to diabetes in one in four African-American women over 55. Diabetes leads to many women suffering amputation and/or kidney failure. Alice Randall is on a crusade to help women recognize this problem and find ways to overcome it.

Controlling insulin production is key to weight loss

Small steps towards losing weight

Small steps towards losing weight

Insulin is secreted at higher than normal amounts if you consume lots of wheat, grains, and processed foods(all which contain glutens). The pancreas secretes insulin which can irritate your blood vessel lining and can lead to coronary artery disease and atherosclerosis. For most Americans it is all about the insulin.

Genes are not the cause of obesity, insulin is. When you have high insulin levels, you have a much harder time losing weight. When you do not exercise, your insulin level rise. High insulin levels mean that you will have a greater risk of degenerative diseases, heart disease, coronary artery disease, and obesity. It is simply your diet- processed foods, grains, sugar as well as lack of exercise. These things make your cells less receptive to insulin. The blood sugar rises and your pancreas secretes more insulin. [Read more]

Comfort Foods (Tim Hawk, NJ.com)

Comfort foods have become a way of life these days. It’s not hard to understand why we need comfort foods. Our lives are full of stress. The crashing economy has scared most intelligent people silly. The thought that what we formerly believed was enough money to live on has now become barely adequate is enough to send anyone running to the ice cream carton or the macaroni and cheese bowl or the potato chip bag.

We seek comfort when we are stressed. We learned as babies that milk was comfort. When we were sick as children, we were comforted by chicken soup or ice cream or whatever Mom’s favorite cookie recipe was. We continued as teens to comfort our growing insecurity about our popularity with cheeseburgers, soft drinks and doughnuts. We entered college and survived on pizzas to overcome exam jitters. Senate State and Local Government Committee approves election integrity bill and legislation honoring Republican Majority on State Election Commission

gop-logoNASHVILLE, TN:  Legislation protecting the integrity of elections in Tennessee overcame its first hurdle towards passage this week with approval by the Senate State and Local Government Committee.   The bill requires voters to provide photo identification to guard against fraud and assure only U.S. citizens vote.

“Unfortunately, we know that voter fraud exists and that there are people who try to be dishonest in an election,” said Senator Bill Ketron (R-Murfreesboro), Chairman of the Committee and sponsor of the bill.  “This bill aims to curtail such abuse by making sure those persons voting are who they say they are.” [Read more]
