Clarksville Teacher Whitney Joyner chosen for Prestigious Overseas World War II Program

National History DayWashington, D.C. – Whitney Joyner of Northeast Middle School is one of only 18 middle and high school educators selected to participate in Understanding Sacrifice, a partnership between National History Day®, the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media, the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC), and the National Cemetery Administration (NCA).

When the program kicks off in November 2016 every educator will select one American who is buried or memorialized at an ABMC or NCA cemetery in San Francisco, Honolulu, or Manila.

Participants will conduct in-depth research on the life of this Fallen Hero using local and national historical resources.

Tennessee Students Compete for Honors at District History Day Contests

Austin Peay State University to play host to North Middle District Contest

Tennessee History DayNashville, TN – Beginning next week, students from across the state will demonstrate their research abilities, knowledge and creativity in the world’s leading program for history education.

The district level competitions for Tennessee History Day are scheduled to take place from February 22nd through March 24th in Greeneville, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Clarksville, Murfreesboro, and Memphis. In the competitions, students in grades six through 12 will present history-themed projects in a variety of formats – including museum-style exhibits, papers, web sites, documentaries and even live performances. Judges are university professors, high school teachers, museum curators, archivists and other public historians.

Northeast Middle School Students perform Civil War play

The Customs House Museum and Cultural CenterClarksville, TN – Lauryn Jennings, Ariana Nelson and Brianna Tyre, 8th grade students at Northeast Middle School, performed their short play “Nannie Haskins: Tolerating the Enemy” at the Customs House Museum on Saturday, June 11th.

Tyre played the part of the Southern Woman, Nelson was Nannie Haskins and Jennings performed the part of the Northern Woman.

Nannie Haskins: Tolerating the Enemy

The Customs House Museum and Cultural CenterClarksville, TN – On Saturday, June 11th, Nannie Haskins: Tolerating the Enemy will be performed at the Customs House Museum from 1:00pm to 1:20pm. The play was written and produced by Lauryn Jennings, Ariana Nelson and Brianna Tyre, 8th grade students at Northeast Middle School. They will be performing in the National History Day Competition later this month.

Admission is free.

Planters Presents $500 to Northeast Middle School

Planters BankClarksville, TN – Planters Bank Vice President Joe Pitts and Credit Analyst Lance Joyner present a check for $500.00 to Northeast Middle School students for the upcoming National Robotics Challenge in Chattanooga on May 8th and National History Day in Washington, D.C. in June.

Teachers Polly Kopp and Whitney Joyner guided students through local and state competitions.
