Written by Dr. Dewey Browder

CommentaryClarksville, TN – There is a community treasure here in Clarksville that gets too little credit but continues to entertain and inspire over and over again, year after year. That community treasure is the Cumberland Winds.

This non-profit organization presents a variety of ensembles that include a concert band, the Jazz Project (big band), brass and woodwind quintets, horn quartet, jazz combo, a Dixie band, and a German band. These musicians offer everything from concerts to solo performances that please all ages and celebrate as the occasion demands.

Cooling at the Cave back, bigger than ever

July 31, 2019

Dunbar Cave State ParkClarksville, TN – The Friends of Dunbar Cave hosted its annual Cooling at the Cave on Saturday, July 27th, 2019, drawing what some said was the largest crowd ever for the event that takes the citizens of Clarksville more than half-a-century back in time.

Hundreds enjoyed the music of Clarksville’s own Cumberland Winds Jazz Project, under the direction of Mike Ritter. The band set up near the mouth of the cave, from which spills cool air year round. A feature that decades ago made Dunbar Cave the most popular venue in town.

Jazz great Gregoire Maret to headline 53rd annual Mid-South Jazz Festival at APSU

March 28, 2014

APSU Department of MusicClarksville, TN – At 92, Toots Thielemans is considered the world’s greatest jazz harmonica musician, having played with luminaries such as Charlie Parker and Miles Davis.

In 2012, Thielemans made a guest appearance on 37-year-old Gregoire Maret’s self-titled debut solo album, and most music critics saw this as a passing of the baton to a new master of the jazz harmonica.

APSU’s 52nd annual Mid-South Jazz Festival April 3rd-6th

The Clarksville Community Concert AssociationClarksville, TN – In 2011, the New York Times published a review of a new jazz album, “Dawn of Goodbye,” by a trumpeter named Dominick Farinacci. The album cover, printed with the article, showed a black and white image of a handsome, but very young-looking, 28-year-old musician. That picture caused some jazz aficionados to assume the album was the work of a novice. The Times review intended to correct that misconception.

“Mr. Farinacci plays beautifully, with expressive control, throughout a program of love-haunted standards and compatible originals, including his yearning title track,” the review stated. “His phrasing attests to some close study of Miles Davis and Clifford Brown, but avoids outright imitation.”
