June 27, 2018

Austin Peay State University

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – Before the Austin Peay State University (APSU) Governor’s School for Computational Physics finished its three weeks of summer fun on Friday, the school’s mentors and professors had a little bit more science to show off.

After Bryan Gaither and Jeremiah Simmons boiled water in this steel drum, they sealed it and put it in an ice bath. Within 90 seconds it imploded. (Austin Peay State University)

APSU physics major Joshua Allen completes Summer Research Program at Princeton

October 25, 2017

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – There is a psychological phenomenon, known as imposter syndrome, that reflect the belief that a person is inadequate or lacking in the skills to complete a task — the fear that your lack of preparation will be exposed when put to the test.

Austin Peay State University senior physics major Joshua Allen briefly understood that feeling when he began his summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program at Princeton University, but any fears he may have internalized quickly vanished when he began work at the Ivy League institution’s Princeton Center for Complex Materials (PCCM).

APSU physics professor receives $300,000 NSF grant to conduct research on innovative glass materials

December 7, 2016

Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TN – Crystalline materials form the foundation of virtually all electronic equipment, serve as the engine powering Silicon Valley and have enabled the modern computing revolution.

But despite their importance, crystalline materials, which include silicon and sapphire and are valued for their unique properties, are naturally rare and expensive to produce.  By contrast glass materials, which do not arrange their atoms in a regular crystal structure, are inexpensive and easily produced.

For the past few years, Austin Peay State University undergraduate students and professors have been traveling the globe to work with some of the world’s leading experts in glass production as they explore possible substitutes for crystalline materials in computing, optical technology and other modern applications.
