APSU’s GIS Center and Oak Ridge Receive $400,000 Grant for Cell Phone App Program
April 14, 2011
Clarksville, TN – On a stormy Monday afternoon, while tornado sirens blared across the Austin Peay State University campus, Mike Wilson, manager of the school’s Geographic Information Systems Center, decided to talk about natural disasters.
“Suppose a tornado rips through here,” he said, knocking on his wood desk to ward off the suggestion. “If that happens, local officials will need to do a preliminary damage assessment. That’ll go to the state, and the governor will make a decision on whether to call in FEMA for a natural disaster. This app speeds that up.”
Wilson motioned to his Android mobile phone. A year ago, his office, in conjunction with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, developed an innovative new cell phone application known as the Disaster Mitigation and Recovery Kit (DMARK). McDonald’s on Riverside Drive now Re-open
March 26, 2011
Clarksville, TN – It’s been 10 months since the Great Flood of 2010, but Eric Larson the owner of Larson Enterprises remembers it well. “”When the manager got here that morning at 5:00am and the water was on the far side of the intersection. We thought that it would stop by time it reached the sidewalk, but instead it kept inching up all day. The old store was raised up slightly so towards the end it was like an island surrounded by the rising water.”
Indeed many of you remember the sight of the lone car abandoned at the drive-thru window. “The driver of the car was not allowed to leave by the police, who feared that the water around the store had gotten too deep.” Larson said. “The water kept rising and before you know it, we had 2-1/2 foot of water in the store, the water got up to the table tops.”
