Two APSU Students earn prestigious Goldwater Scholarships

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Administrators at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) were probably pretty excited last month when they learned one of their students had earned a highly competitive Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship.

To the south, officials at the University of Tennessee likely experienced a similar rush when they heard one of their students was also named a Goldwater Scholar.

Austin Peay physics student conducted research in Czech Republic this summer

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – In a laboratory in the Czech Republic town of Pardubice, Austin Peay State University physics student James Winegar tried to strike up a conversation with a local Ph.D. student. Winegar, one of the few English speakers around, had spent much of the summer working on his Czech language skills, so he thought it was a good opportunity to practice a few phrases.

“He said, ‘stop butchering my language,’ or something to that effect,” Winegar said. “He said, ‘you’re not allowed to speak it anymore.’” [Read more]

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University recently launched the inaugural APSU Goes Global program, an international service-learning opportunity now open to juniors in the President’s Emerging Leaders Program (PELP) and TRiO Student Support Services.

APSU Goes Global is led by Dr. Matthew Kenney, director of the President’s Emerging Leaders Program and associate professor of political science.

Two Austin Peay State University students earn prestigious Goldwater Scholarships

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Harvard University had a couple of students receive prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships this year. So did MIT and Princeton. Another school on that list to have an unprecedented two students receive scholarships was Austin Peay State University, with physics majors Drew Kerr and Mason Yost.

“The Goldwater Scholarship is for rising juniors and seniors, and it’s very competitive and prestigious,” Dr. Matthew Kenney, APSU political science associate professor and the University’s Goldwater Scholarship representative, said. “It carries with it a $7,500 scholarship.”

Austin Peay State University student to study physics at Louvre in Paris this summer

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – The art world, it turns out, can use a good physicist. When it comes to restoring priceless works, identifying forgeries or discovering long lost masterpieces painted over centuries ago, curators at the world’s top museums and galleries turn to their colleagues in the sciences for help.

This summer, officials at the Louvre Museum in Paris might look to Austin Peay State University physics student Drew Kerr to assist them in making discoveries about the famed works in their collection.

APSU Presidential Research Scholars Program announces students for 2011-12

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Ten undergraduate students at Austin Peay State University have been chosen for the 2011-12 Presidential Research Scholars Program.

Students in the program were selected for the May 1st, 2011, to April 30th, 2012, award period. The Research Scholars Program works to promote independent research training and creative activity with scholarly merit and supports the incorporation of research training into the collegiate educational experience.
