Austin Peay celebrates 90 years of Residence Life

Clarksville, TN – In the fall of 1931, Austin Peay Normal School students eagerly watched construction crews put the finishing touches on an impressive new dormitory.
The Myra McKay Harned Hall, with its “columns and polish marble floors,” would soon become the centerpiece of a young campus crowded with old, deteriorating academic buildings, left over from the defunct schools – Stewart College and Montgomery County Masonic College – that once occupied the Austin Peay grounds.

Clarksville, TN – Scott Shumate thought he was going to get a cat. The IT analyst for Digital Services at Austin Peay State University’s Felix G. Woodward Library had a cat lined up last summer – his friends had a stray but weren’t allowed to have pets.

Clarksville, TN – Seeing UH60 Black Hawk helicopters circling above is not unusual in Clarksville Tennessee. However, seeing them land at Austin Peay State University’s campus in Downtown Clarksville is.
As part of a coordinated effort between Austin Peay’s Governors Guard ROTC program and the Tennessee National Guard, the APSU ROTC department has arranged to have Black Hawk helicopters land on campus three times over the next several weeks.

Dave Loos Basketball Camp at APSU set for June 6th-9th

Clarksville, TN – The Dave Loos Basketball Camp will be held June 6th through June 9th, 2016 at the APSU Dunn Center. Registration is Monday, June 6th from 7:30am until 8:45am. Cost is $125.00.
The Dave Loos Basketball Camp is designed to provide campers the opportunity to improve basketball skills through the reaching of solid fundamentals, all while building character, spending quality time together, fostering relationships and bonding through the game of basketball.
Annual Card Party returns to APSU May 21st

Clarksville, TN – The semester is coming to a close at Austin Peay State University, which means it’s time for the annual Card Party on campus.
This year’s event, featuring games of Rook, Bridge and other card games, will be from 10:00am to 1:00pm on Wednesday, May 21st, at the Morgan University Center Ballroom.

APSU to celebrate Women in Athletics April 5th-6th with focus on Title IX

Clarksville, TN – It’s time to laud all current and former female athletes at Austin Peay State University.
The second Women in Athletics celebration, scheduled for April 5th-6th, will spotlight the 40th anniversary of Title IX, monumental federal legislation first enacted in 1972 that requires gender equity in sports and other key educational programs receiving federal funding.
The law states, “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” [Read more]
Austin Peay State University receives $1.78M grant to build safe rooms in Student Residence Halls

Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University has received a grant of more than $1.78 million to build safe rooms in the basements of the new residence halls now under construction on Drane Street.
Of the total funds awarded, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) contributed more than $1.5 million, supported with an additional $250,000 from the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA). APSU matched an additional $250,000 toward the $2 million project. [Read more]
Phase II construction of Austin Peay student housing now under way

Clarksville, TN – For the last few weeks, the Austin Peay State University community has watched the demolition of three student residence halls that have been a mainstay on the campus for more than three decades.
Now, another historical milestone will unfold, months after the new Castle Heights residence hall opened on campus. Construction for the second phase of the student housing complex is under way on Drane Street – and it has the potential to change the layout of the campus.
