Shoppers started lining up outside the store with the first arriving around 3:00am, and the bulk starting to arrive around 5:00am for the 6:45am ribbon cutting.

The Clarksville-Area Chamber of Commerce conducted the ribbon cutting with Store Manager Norman Rubio Jr. doing the honors, with Montgomery County Mayor Carolyn Bowers and Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan holding the ribbon.

The crowds started gathering at 3:00am for the 6:45am opening, with the bulk of the crowd starting to arrive at 4:00am. The first twenty five people in line received a $25.00 bag with some free groceries. When the doors opened the ribbon cutting ceremony began.

The VIP guests and assembled shoppers were welcomed to the new store by Manager Norman Rubio, who has been with the chain for over twenty years. He got his start bagging groceries and worked his way up the chain until he was managing stores in the Atlanta market. He also was part of the team that opening the first Publix store in Tennessee 9 years ago in Hermitage Tennessee. “This is as exciting (opening the store in Hermitage), if not more so; coming to Clarksville as a new market. We have been so well received; you have welcomed us with open arms,” he said.

Rubio takes his commitment to his customers very seriously, “I look forward to serving the community along with my team and staff…My office is out here on the sales floor along with my staff. Approach me, ask me questions, I’ll serve you as best I can. If there are things or items that the store does not carry that is a favorite and you haven’t seen it in a while, I pledge to you, I sincerely pledge to you that I will do my best to get you anything that you want to bring home to serve your family and your friends.”

Montgomery County Mayor Carolyn Bowers addresses the crowd

After Rubio finished speaking Montgomery County Mayor Carolyn Bowers addressed the crowd, “This is the first day of the first Publix in Clarksville, Tennessee and that is something that we should all be excited about. Yesterday Publix committed to being a part of our community and serving our community by presenting two $1,000 checks, one to United Way, and one to the Clarksville-Montgomery County Education Foundation. That is a great way to start supporting our community. We know that the Publix Corporation is fantastic company for their employees, our citizens, and our community. It’s owned by their employees and they are really committed to serving their customers and our community. We are so excited about the quality of their merchandise and their service. We are really excited to have them as a partner in our community. It wasn’t too long ago; June 2010 were we were breaking ground, and here today we are opening the store. So congratulations Publix we welcome you!”

Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan addresses the crowd

She was followed by Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan. Mayor McMillan started off addressing the people who braved the early morning hours to be at the front of the line to get in the new store, “I am happy about these first 25 people, I know you were here early to be the first 25 people in line. That’s right!” She then joked about both her and Mayor Bowers wearing “Publix green” jackets, “This is how excited Mayor Bowers and I are, we thought that we were not coming to cut the ribbon but to come to work, so we kinda dressed like everybody else! I think after this is over we can go over there and start working, and they would welcome us because that is how Publix is.”

She then spoke about how proud Clarksville was to have Publix choose to come to our community, “We are so excited to have this store here in this community. In addition to the checks that you already heard, they also gave $1,000 to Big Brothers, Big Sisters. I think what that shows is their commitment to this community. Their employees are here, they are all smiling, and ready to go to work. I am truly excited for the citizens of Clarksville to have this opportunity here with this wonderful corporate citizen. So welcome thank you for coming, thank you for being a part of our community! Thank you!”

Then it was time for the ribbon cutting. Rubio cut the ribbon after having the crowd join him in a countdown from 5. Then the audience broke into cheers and applause.

Shopping in the produce section

The Deli

After the ribbon cutting the store was open to the public and crowds eagerly dispersed through the store. “We have here a great variety of fresh products and private label products that we wish for you to enjoy and purchase.” said Rubio. Among the unique features are the Bakery which bakes fresh breads and desserts in house; the full-service deli which provides a variety of Boar’s Head meats and cheeses, along with Rotisserie and fried chicken; the International Food section; fresh seafood; and an in house butcher shop. The shopping center has the usual variety of groceries that any supermarket in the world would have with an open and airy presentation.

Brenda Burkhardt, was the second person in line to get into the store. She said, “I have been looking forward to Publix coming to Clarksville for a long time. I used to go to the one in Nashville every once in a while but not very often because it was so far away. I liked their food and their generics are fantastic. I love their glass cleaner! Their meats are also excellent, they have very good meats here.”

Brenda Burkhardt checking out

Rev. Jimmy Terry from Tabernacle Baptist Church was on hand at the opening. He feels that the new store is a great boost for the community, “It says something about the growth of Clarksville that they came here with all the other markets that we already had, and they came here with all this, and then are already planning to build another one it says something about the Clarksville Community. Not to mention, competition is great!” They have been looking forward to the opening, “My wife and I have been looking forward to the store’s arrival since they announced it.”

Phyllis Fox was attending her first grand opening, “The store is beautiful, everything looks wonderfully delicious. The fruit is really fresh looking, and I can’t wait to get some good bread, their Whole Wheat breads.” She loves the fact that the store stocks a selection of raw nuts and sunflower seeds, and hopes they will consider adding pumpkin seeds to their selection.

City Council member Geno Grubbs was among the City Council members on hand at the opening, “I think this store is just beautiful, and it will be a great asset to the community. I mean look at how crowded this store is at 7:00am, it’s packed! With the great service and the wonderful staff that Publix has, this will be a great place to shop.”

Owner: Elizabeth McCoy is the CEO.

Tell us about your business: Planters Bank offers five full-service branches and a mortgage office in the Clarksville area, plus another three full-service branches in Hopkinsville. We deliver a full range of products and services that provide timely solutions to consumer and business financial needs and opportunities.

What products/services do you offer to your customers: We offer a full gamut of financial products and services including checking, savings, CD’s, and money market accounts, trust and cash management services, and loans.

How long you have been open: Planters celebrated its 15-year anniversary in 2011.

Why did you open downtown?

From the beginning of its days in Hopkinsville, the founders of the bank always had plans to locate in Clarksville. Downtown, the financial center of Clarksville-Montgomery County, was simply the obvious place to start.

The emphasis on rebuilding downtown after the tornado provided the perfect opportunity from a timing standpoint. So, we were one of the first businesses to commit to build after that event, and one of the first to open anew in the post-tornado downtown Clarksville.

Most challenging part of being downtown?

We are a block or so off of the highest-traffic roads, so visibility has been a bit of a challenge. The 100 block of Franklin Street has been promoted as “Clarksville’s historic downtown,” but that’s much more to the downtown landscape beyond that single block.

Most rewarding part of being downtown?

Unlike our suburban branches, our downtown branch experiences a fair amount of pedestrian traffic from neighboring businesses. The physical proximity to a variety of other retail and service organizations makes a downtown location a rewarding experience. As well, employees have the opportunity to walk, visit customers and prospects, shop and dine, without having to drive.

Favorite part of being part of the downtown business community:

We love being involved opportunities and events that promote and create awareness for downtown Clarksville. It is the heart of our community and we hope it always will be. Many of our employees are native Clarksvillians, or spent our “growing up years” here and have wonderful memories of downtown retail, entertainment and events from decades past.

We’re thrilled to be part of the resurgence of that quality atmosphere so that our children can have those same types of experiences and memories.

One store that is bucking this trend is the Hilltop CB Supermarket at 400 Highway 149. This locally owned and operated grocery store still has freshly butchered meat daily and runs sales that make it worth driving the extra few miles to take advantage of.

Wayne Hall opened the original Hilltop Supermarket, in a 5,000 square-feet building, across the street from its current location in 1967. In 1990, when the new store (then 12,000 square feet) opened where it now stands, Mr. Hall convinced his brother-in-law, Mike Jackson, to become store manager. Mike is still handling the day-to-day operations for the store which provides 50 jobs to the local economy.

In 1995, the building was expanded to 24,500 square feet with not only groceries and fresh meat, but a deli, bakery, and a country food hot bar. One of their specialties is farm fresh smoked sausage which is available from Thanksgiving to Easter—yum! They also sell whole country hams that they are willing to slice for you, if you wish.

The Deli at the Hilltop Supermarket

You can shop at the Hilltop Supermarket Monday through Saturday from 6:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. and on Sunday from 7:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. They have a community bill payment center; where you can buy stamps, money orders, send a Western Union message, or pay your CEMC and Charter bills. The store also features a Cumberland Bank & Trust branch for all of your banking needs. Their Deli offers a catering service, and can provide food for events ranging from 25 to 500 people.

The store is super clean grocery store that prides itself not only on the high quality of its offerings, but also serving the community in as many ways as possible.

A big supporter of education, at the front of the store are boxes where parents and friends of schools “on this side of the river” can place their receipts. At the end of the school year, all these receipts are counted. The Hilltop Supermarket partners with a company that provides the school with equipment (equal to the total amount of the receipts) like new computers, cameras, and all types of school supplies. They also host a Fall Festival to raise money for Montgomery Central’s sports programs. Each team including the cheerleaders and other groups can set up a booth on the grass lot in from of the store. All of the proceeds they raise go to the team or group holding the sale.

Hilltop Supermarket has community events throughout the year. Coming up soon will be the sixteenth annual Easter Egg Hunt for 350 to 400 kids. “We have everything furnished by our store and other local venders; there are 200 to 300 toy prizes,” Mike Jackson reports. “The grand prize is always something like a bicycle or basketball goal. It’s a big event and the kids have a great time.”

Over 400 kids attended Hilltop Market's 16th Annual Easter Egg Hunt.

In May they play host to a KC-style Barbecue Cook-off. Now in its third year, it is being expanded to include not only chicken and ribs but beef brisket and pulled pork barbecue. A car show will begin on Friday night as the barbecue specialists arrive and get set up. On Friday night, the Bud Lite and Miller Lite folks are going to compete to see who has the best barbecue. Saturday features the other competitors and you can get in on the tasting! Local politicians, police officers, and even Mark Haynes, owner of Clarksville Online and Discover Clarksville—have served as judges for the barbecue offerings!

From April to October, either on Friday or Sunday (still in the decision process as of this writing), the Hilltop Car Shows will take place the first week of the month. Come on out and see that fabulous car you’ve been remembering since your teenage years!

Store manager Mike Jackson with one of Hilltop Supermarket's original sales paper

Over the years, many changes have taken place in the grocery business. Keeping up with technology is one of their biggest challenges, Mike admits. Security cameras are everywhere, of course, but most customers are the same families who have made Hilltop the superb business it is today.

“We pride ourselves on our fresh meat and low prices,” Mike Jackson claims. “Very few groceries butcher their own meat any more. We feel that this is important to our customers so that they can have safe and delicious meals. We have many families who shop with us—first the grandmother, then the mother and now the daughter.”

Evidence of that is the fact that more than 400 people have signed up at the Hilltop Supermarket’s web site at www.hilltopsupermarket.com to receive email on Monday mornings from the store with the specials for the week. You too can sign up, find out the sale, load up your coolers and head on over to the Hilltop CB.

You’ll be glad you did.

The only real diet that works is to cut back a little each day and exercise more.

That being said, I’ve found the greatest location for having a wonderful feast whether or not you are dieting. It’s called Woody’s Pizza. Rumor has it that the first location was Erin and then another opened in Dover. The perfection of the food demanded a move to where even more people could sample the scrumptious offerings.

One of the friendly servers at Woody's Pizza

Woody’s (hand-tossed) Pizza now has three locations in Clarksville—1477A Dover Road (Woodlawn), 939A Tracey Lane (101st and Whitfield), and 3-402 Cainlo Drive, Suite 500 (Tiny Town Road).

I ate at the Woodlawn location at lunch recently and can’t wait to go back.

Cheese Breadsticks

Bill Larson, the editor for Clarksville Online, and I began our feast with the best cheese breadsticks I’ve ever eaten in my entire life. They are served like a pizza that has been cut into small pieces from the pan-size circle of homemade dough. The hot cheese melted on top has finger-lickin’ good flavor that keeps you coming back for more. Personally, I could make my entire lunch on these bread sticks.

However, our next delicacy was the barbecued chicken wings. The sauce is just right. It’s not heavy or greasy or sloppy to eat. It flavors the chicken without overwhelming it. The wings are mostly meat and are described as “bone-suckin’ good” by those who care to converse between bites. The alternative to the barbecued wings is those termed “hot and spicy” that we’ll try on another visit.

BBQ Hot Wings

Then came the pizza. We had a large “Select” with pepperoni, sausage, onion, mushrooms and a substitution of fresh tomatoes for the usual green peppers. Two pieces each was all we could devour, leaving each of us enough for a take-home dinner. Other choices for pizza are the Hawaiian (ham and pineapple), All Meat (pepperoni, sausage, ham, ground beef and bacon), Veggie (mushrooms, green peppers, onion, black olives and green olives), Super Select (pepperoni, sausage, onion, green peppers, mushrooms, ham, ground beef, black olives and green olives), Four Cheese (mozzarella, provolone, cheddar and feta cheeses), Bacon Double Cheese Burger (bacon, ground beef, mozzarella and cheddar cheese), and Pepperoni Creation (pepperoni and more pepperoni).

The Pizza

Just think: if you go back just to taste each and ever variety of pizza, you could have eight different selections accompanied by your soft drink or beer of choice! You can even purchase gift cards for introducing your friends and family members to this wonderful alternative to cooking.

Yes, of course, they have take out!

Amazingly, if you order a pizza, they give you dessert with your meal—such a deal! We had the cinnamon sticks. They were literally to die for! Sweet, hot, succulent bread with sugar and cinnamon melted on top—-aaahhh! Bliss!

They also have apple dessert pizza—and I’ve yet to try this but I can hardly wait.

Now if you’re not in the mood for pizza (sigh!), you can start with either an Italian salad (lettuce, tomato, black olives, green olives, green peppers, ham, onion, pepperoni, cheese, croûtons, bacon and egg) or a house salad (lettuce, tomato, green peppers, ham, cheese, croûtons and onions). The choice for dressings is Italian, ranch, thousand island, bleu cheese, honey mustard or French.

Then there are the pastas—baked spaghetti with meat sauce and/or meatballs, baked lasagna, or baked manicotti.

One of Woody's delicious sub sandwiches

Last but not least are the subs (all of which are accompanied by chips and a drink included in the original price). You can have Italian, ham and cheese, pizza, roast beef, meatball, Philly steak, BLT with cheese, Cajun chicken, turkey, club, or the Ultimate (salami, ham, pepperoni, turkey, roast beef, cheese, onion, lettuce, tomato, mustard, mayo and Italian dressing).

At Woody’s, all the dough is hand-tossed and is made fresh daily. Each serving is made fresh as you order it—and is well worth waiting for.

The restaurants are filled with military memorabilia on inviting red walls. Name tags are affixed to one wall with the names of Woody’s patrons who are currently deployed.

Hours are Sunday through Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until11:00 p.m.

One of the smartest additions to every table is your own personal roll of paper towels. You’re going to love not having to ask two or three times for extra napkins. This is real finger food worth sampling again and again.

I don’t know about you but I’m putting Woody’s on my list of “do not miss this” destinations for 2012. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

See you later! I’m heading for Woody’s right now.

Neely comes to WJZM after 21 months as the Sports Director of WKSR AM-FM in Pulaski, Tennessee. Neely was hired, after a nationwide search, to join former Leaf Chronicle sports writer, James Horne, in launching a new sports show on 1400 Wjzm, “From the Sidelines,” weekday afternoons, 3:00pm-6:00pm. Neely will also be a staff writer for Clarksvillesportsnetwork.com, expected to be online in 2012.

Hank Bonecutter, President of Cumberland Radio Partners Inc., owners of Wjzm radio, is excited about the new venture. “We saw an opportunity to provide the Clarksville area with a more complete package of sports reporting, focusing on local sports, and the people who are involved in them. We will host more sports on radio than any other radio station in Clarksville, and fill our website with more stories, photos and features than is available anywhere in the Clarksville area.”

Wade Neely joins WJZM radio and the Clarksville Sports Network.

He comes from a great family, and is eager to advance his career, and have opportunities to stretch his talents. Clarksville is a perfect step for this young man’s career. He’s going to be a good one.”

Neely also served as the lead play-by-play announcer for the 2011 Sun Belt conference soccer tournament and provided fill in work during the 2011 NAIA national soccer tournament. He also served as a correspondent at The Columbia Daily Herald, covering sports throughout the southeast on the high school, college and professional levels. Neely also provided the paper with exclusive coverage during the 2011 Memphis Grizzlies playoff run.

Neely is a 2009 graduate of Middle Tennessee State University, where he majored in broadcast journalism and minored in economics. “I’m extremely excited about joining Wjzm and the Clarksville Sports Network. Clarksville is a great city with a very long and rich sports history and I look forward to embracing its teams and traditions. I look forward to working with James Horne, and hope to provide Clarksville with a great talk show filled with local sports.”

Neely will be responsible for covering Austin Peay State University sports, and will handle all play-by-play chores moving forward. He will also be a contributing writer for the new website, www.clarksvillesportsnetwork.com, expected to be online by January 1st, 2012. “I look forward to covering Austin Peay, a school that has achieved tremendous success, and has a great tradition in Clarksville” Neely said.

Sports fans can follow the Clarksville Sports Network on Facebook, and will find stories on Clarksville Online. Listen to 1400Wjzm and www.Wjzm.com for more information.

By the way, the proper pronunciation is “row-gah-teh’s” not “row-gate’s” (rhyming with “too late”). The name of the store is the first name of Rogate Hadley, the store’s owner. Her Swiss parents chose an Italian name for her, hence the pronunciation.

Clarksville, TN – As a manager of a downtown business, I get asked all the time about my shop, and other downtown shops and why we choose to be part of a downtown community. Why did we decide to be here versus a strip mall, independent building or in the mall. Well, I know what the owner of ARTifacts, Paige King, would say. But I can’t say for sure what the reasoning for the other business owners in downtown would say.

So I decided it was time to ask! I thought it would be a good idea to ask all the members of the Downtown Clarksville Association (DCA) all the questions we get asked daily and share them with you here. Starting with Ingredients – and continuing with all the businesses who decide to participate in this segment of feature articles. I hope this gives you insight of the downtown shops, restaurants and businesses. I know it has helped me!

Tell us about yourself!

After traveling around for the Army several years we decided to make Clarksville our home and have lived here for 18 years. Mitchell teaches ROTC at Kenwood High School and Monica retired from the school system after 15 years in the business office.

What made you open a shop/restaurant? We talked about owning a business together almost from the first day we met and we followed our dream.

What is your favorite part of running your business? Meeting people.

What inspires you? Our fellow small business owners. Their guidance and encouragement helps us carry on.

Tell us about your business. What products/services do you offer to your customers: We offer kitchen items from pots and pans to textiles; spices to dipping oils; cutting boards to tableware and items in between!

How long you have been open: We opened July 2009.

Why did you open downtown? We have always shopped in the downtowns of the cities we lived in and never thought about opening anywhere but downtown. Each city we left, we left behind friends we got to know who were owners or managers of the boutiques and restaurants downtown. Downtowns are unique and cannot be duplicated in a mall or a strip mall. Just look around at the of the history!

Most challenging part of being downtown? People coming in and saying “I never shop downtown”. Most rewarding part of being downtown? Helping to bring downtown “back to life”, seeing new businesses open and watching established business succeed.

Favorite part of being part of the downtown business community: Being part of the downtown family. We have developed friendships that are very important to us.

Where are you located?
