APSU Military History Alum earns prestigious fellowship with U.S. Customs and Border Protection

Paul Witkowski of the United States Army was stationed on the Afghanistan/Pakistan border, trying to keep enemy combatants and supplies from passing through the region. It was a tricky assignment, given the province’s mountainous terrain and the absence of a fence or other obstruction between the two countries.

Later this summer, he’ll take what he learned in that war zone to Washington, D.C., where he’ll spend a year with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency as part of an Interagency Exchange Program fellowship. [Read more]

Fort Campbell Welcome Home Ceremony for the 159th Combat Aviation Brigade

101st Airborne DivisionFort Campbell, KY – On February 20th, 2012, the 101st Airborne Division welcomed home 186 soldiers from the 159th Combat Aviation Brigade. The Brigade returns from a year deployment to Afghanistan. This was the last incoming flight for the 158th CAB.

With this flight, all Brigades of the 101st Airborne Division are safely back home.

“Good luck, you’ve come a long way to get here. You’ve earned it,” he said to Byron Pitts.

Pitts was about to make his first on-camera studio open for the CBS News Broadcast “60 Minutes.” Pitts thought to himself, “if only Fagan knew.” His mind flashed back to elementary school, when a therapist informed his mother, “I’m sorry, Mrs. Pitts, your son cannot read.

APSU History Honor Society celebrates 50th anniversary

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – In May of 1961, a group of young Austin Peay State University students, believing that they were living at the end of history, chartered a new campus honor society focused on studying the past.

“We thought we had missed all the great things,” Riley Darnell (’62), former Tennessee secretary of state and founding member of the club, said. “There would be no more wars.”

The Kiwanis Club “Interview A Veteran” Essay Contest Winners

Kiwanis ClubClarksville, TN – The Kiwanis Club of Clarksville their “Interview A Veteran” Essay Contest Winners program Tuesday, November 8th 2011. The Essay contest was open to all Clarksville Montgomery School System and Fort Campbell students ages 6-12.

Each school winner was awarded a plaque and a $100.00 gift card by the Kiwanis Club of Clarksville. The Middle School and High School Division winners received a U.S. flag formerly flown over the U.S. Capitol, a special patriotic award, and an additional $100.00 gift card.

Fort Campbell Welcome Home Ceremony for 200 Soldiers

Fort Campbell, KY – On November 1st, 2011 around 4:45pm, 200 soldiers from the 584th Ordnance Maintenance Company part of the 101st Sustainment Brigade “Lifeliners” returned home to Fort Campbell KY. They were returning home from a 12-month deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom where their mission was to provide field maintenance within Regional Command-East as part of the 142nd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion.
