Then again, there is nothing usual about Clarksville sculptor Mike Andrews‘ “New Old Stock” exhibit at the Customs House Museum and Cultural Center.

The relationship between Andrews and the Clarksville Foundry began in 1983 after he visited the historic manufacturing company as a student of Tennessee artist Olen Bryant.

Click here to view the embedded video.

“I had learned about lost wax casting and was interested in industrial casting,” said Andrews. “I met with Mr. Charles Foust Sr. and he encouraged me to do some castings in iron and aluminum.”

As Andrews progressed from art student to professional sculptor, he continued his working relationship at the foundry with Charles and his son Charlie Foust, who has been president since 1981. A unique relationship, built on mutual respect, history and a love of art has developed over the years and is now culminating in a joint sculpture exhibit.

<a target="_blank" href="http://www.clarksvilleonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Andrews-Foust.jpg" class="thickbox no_icon" rel="gallery-15188" title="Sculptor Mike Andrews (left) and Clarksville Foundry President Charlie Foust sort through antique foundry pattern pieces for the ―New Old Stock‖ sculptures.
“New Old Stock is the beginning of a new chapter in my art that has come about with the gracious support of Charlie and the Clarksville Foundry,” Andrews explained.

<a target="_blank" href="http://www.clarksvilleonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Waterworks_Sculpture.jpg" class="thickbox no_icon" rel="gallery-15188" title=" Mike Andrews‘ impressive Waterworks a 4 feet by 2 feet sculpture crafted from retired antique foundry patterns. Andrews carefully selects each piece, regarding its shape and character before incorporating it into a sculpture.

Andrews has designed a unique series of industrial assemblages using wooden foundry patterns that were originally used for metal castings as far back as the foundry was established in 1847. Charlie has kept the molds in foundry storage for more than 30 years, and he is very happy to watch Andrews breathe new life into the pieces.

“The patterns are unique and precious in terms of the quality of woodwork, the skill and the history and heritage they represent to the Clarksville Foundry” expressed Charlie. “Many of the pieces are works of art themselves and could stand alone as collectables. To see them used in such an unusual art form is incredible.”

The retired antique patterns have provided Andrews with an exceptional supply of “New Old Stock” that has become his parts inventory.

“Some of them are over 100 years old,” Andrews observed. “There are amazing shapes and they are beautifully crafted.”

Design and fabrication take on new meaning as Andrews employs innovative dimension and scale for powerful and visually engaging sculptures. He carefully selects each piece, regarding its shape and character before incorporating it into a sculpture.

According to Ruth Crnkovich, President of CRN Fine Art Services, the result is a unique work of art with “wall power.”

“It is something that will grab your attention when you first walk into a room,” said Crnkovich. “A good piece of artwork will continue to pull you in. As you get closer you become more and more intrigued.”

That is what Andrews‘ “New Old Stock” does. As an observer is drawn further into the piece, the sculpture continues to reveal seemingly hidden and intricate details.

A preview of the “New Old Stock” sculptures can be viewed online at http://clarksvillefoundry.com/andrews.

The “New Old Stock: Carvings, Castings and Constructions” exhibit will be open to the public from May 17th – August 31st, 2013, at the Customs House Museum and Cultural Center at 200 South Second Street, Clarksville, Tennessee 37040.

Market Commentary by Scott J. Brown, Ph.D., Chief Economist

The economic data reports were expected to be a series of tough hurdles for the stock market, but they ended up more like minor speed bumps. Share prices continued to rally broadly. The bond market was volatile, as investors debated when the Fed may begin to taper its asset purchases.

Retail sales results for April were better than anticipated – not strong, but not as bad as feared. Industrial production was weaker than expected. Residential construction figures were mixed, reflecting a high degree of volatility in the multi-family sector and continued strength in single-family homebuilding.

The Fed’s two major regional factory sector surveys were weak. The Consumer Price Index fell more than anticipated in April (up 1.1% y/y), with low core inflation (+1.7% y/y). Consumer sentiment improved in the mid-May assessment. The Index of Leading Economic Indicators rose 0.6%, reflecting a jump in building permits.

The Congressional Budget Office lowered its estimate of the FY13 budget deficit by about $200 billion (relative to its previous forecast made three months ago) – about half of that improvement was due to payments made from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (which are not expected to continue), but the longer-term budget outlook also improved.

Next week, the economic calendar thins out somewhat. The reports on new home sales and durable goods orders tend to be volatile (choppy and subject to large revisions), and could surprise. However, the focus is expected to be on Bernanke’s JEC testimony (the topic is “the economic outlook”). The Fed Chairman will present a general assessment of the economy and may provide some clues on what would trigger a slowing in the rate of asset purchases.

The above material has been obtained from sources considered reliable, but we do not guarantee that it is accurate or complete. There is no assurance that any trends mentioned will continue in the future. While interest on municipal bonds is generally exempt from federal income tax, it may be subject to the federal alternative minimum tax, state or local taxes. In addition, certain municipal bonds (such as Build America Bonds) are issued without a federal tax exemption, which subjects the related interest income to federal income tax. Investing involves risk and investors may incur a profit or a loss.

US government bonds and treasury bills are guaranteed by the US government and, if held to maturity, offer a fixed rate of return and guaranteed principal value. US government bonds are issued and guaranteed as to the timely payment of principal and interest by the federal government. Treasury bills are certificates reflecting short-term (less than one year) obligations of the US government.

Commodities trading is generally considered speculative because of the significant potential for investment loss. Markets for commodities are likely to be volatile and there may be sharp price fluctuations even during periods when prices overall are rising. Specific sector investing can be subject to different and greater risks than more diversified investments.

Tax Equiv Muni yields (TEY) assume a 35% tax rate on triple-A rated, tax-exempt insured revenue bonds.

Prior to their recent green ribbon cutting, Red Knight Team Member Ashleigh Sympson explained that owner David Berggren saw the benefits in constructing an energy efficient building and said the building was made to be efficient.

Red Knight Distribution Green Certification Ribbon Cutting

“We recycle all of our metals and cardboard. We purchased our own bailer because almost everything comes in boxes. Our paper is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Certified and we recycle all of our toner,” explained Ashleigh.

Owner David Berggren added, “The money we get from the cardboard makes our dumpster bill a wash and we actually end up with more. Lights are all energy efficient with motion sensors. One of the things you don’t see is pollution and waste in the warehouse section because of the electric equipment and because it is streamlined.”

After cutting the ribbon, Montgomery County Mayor Carolyn Bowers asked them to share some of the other things they did to earn the certification.

Berggren explained, “We are using an electronic dispatch tracking system and last month we saved $500.00 in gas. We hope to save thousands on gas throughout the year. The computer now determines the route and the furniture is packed accordingly. Customers will eventually be able to track where their furniture is in route. Cutting down routing times saves gas, time, money and wear and tear on the vehicles.”

Sympson shared one recent example of a 90 minute saving in one day.

“We also have a standing relationship with another store that takes the old furniture from our customers, restores it and sells it which is another way to keep it out of the landfill,” said Sympson.

Bowers responded, “We’re so happy you took part in this CMC Green Certification Program. I’d also like to know if your employees are taking these efforts home.”

Several of the employees mentioned that they do recycle at home. Berggren said, “My wife won’t allow me to throw anything away. In fact, she puts it in the back of my pick-up truck”

Red Knight Distribution Center oversees the overall operations, distribution, delivery and repair of furniture for the area Furniture Connection and Furniture 123 stores.

You can find more information about their products by visiting www.furnitureconnectionclarksville.com or www.furnish123clarksville.com .

No matter how the stock market is performing or what the current unemployment rate may be, there are still many people battling a cancer diagnosis and many others who are lending support alongside loved ones every day.

Public Invite displayed at the intersection of Old Farmers Old and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway

Local volunteers are a huge part of a nationwide effort to save lives from cancer, but additional people are needed for the progress to continue.

The world’s largest grassroots fundraising movement, Relay For Life, mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and provide participants with an opportunity to fight back against all forms of the disease. Relay brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, faith-based groups . . . people from all walks of life – all aimed at furthering the American Cancer Society’s vision of creating a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

The Montgomery County Relay For Life event will be held in Clarksville beginning at 6:00pm on May 17th at the Hilldale Baptist Church Family Life Center Athletic Field, 250 Old Farmers Road, starting at 5:00pm with onsite registration of Survivors and the ceremonial opening lap.

This family-friendly event has something to offer for participants of all ages and this year’s celebration promises to be the best yet. From the Womanless Beauty Pageant, Box Car Contest, the Crazy Hat Hour, Pajama Party and Togo Party are among a few activities to keep participants alert as we celebrate until sunrise on Saturday.

Following the official opening, other activities included in the staged events will continue as follows:

Under the direction of Tom Thayer, executive director, and John McDonald, artistic director, the theatre will launch the new season on September 13th with the Tony Award-winning musical lovingly ripped off from the motion picture “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” — Monty Python’s Spamalot.

Also included in the fall line-up are Simon Levy’s breathtaking adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, the holiday edition of the wildly popular ‘50s musical Forever Plaid, Plaid Tidings, and the whimsical children’s musical A Year With Frog and Toad.

In the winter, the 12th annual Vagina Monologues will play upstairs in the theatre’s theotherspace, while The Tales of Hans Christian Andersen will bring such classic children’s stories as “The Princess and The Pea” and “The Ugly Duckling” to the mainstage. Ol’ Blue Eyes will return in February with a revival of My Way: A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra. The Roxy’s annual Shakespeare offering will be the Bard’s mistaken-identity comedy Much Ado About Nothing.

The French Revolution will come to the Roxy next spring when Boublil and Schönberg’s acclaimed musical Les Misérables takes the stage, while school-aged audiences will learn about the life of slave turned abolitionist and women’s rights advocate, Sojourner Truth, in A Woman Called Truth.

The Roxy Regional School of the Arts will swing through the end of May in Disney’s Tarzan, while June will yield the hilarious sci-fi musical Little Shop of Horrors. Capping off the season will be the perennial favorite Grease.
