Clarksville, TN – The Wyatt-Johnson Automotive Group has officially announced their acquisition of Joe Heitz Toyota and will add the world’s largest automobile manufacturer to their list of fine quality automotive brands the longtime Clarksville business offers. Wyatt-Johnson already offers GMC, Buick, Subaru, Hyundai, and Mazda new and used vehicles, and effective immediately, now will also offer Toyota cars and trucks as well.

“We’ve been interested in the Toyota franchise for several years. Toyota is a very strong brand and its customer base is very loyal,” said Wyatt-Johnson owner and Dealer Principal Katherine Cannata. “Their product is so dependable and quality-built. We are extremely proud to add them to our fleet.”

The current Joe Heitz Toyota Dealership at 1650 Wilma Rudolph Boulevard will remain open, but will now be called Wyatt-Johnson Toyota, and the former employees of Joe Heitz will continue to work as before, but now under the Wyatt-Johnson name.

“The Joe Heitz Toyota staff are a great group of people and really pride themselves on delivering quality customer service, said Cannata. “We are anxious and excited to bring them into the Wyatt-Johnson family and join our wonderful staff. We have a tremendous team of leaders, including Sidney Johnson, Dealer Principal, and Bill Powers, General Manager of Hyundai Subaru Mazda, and with their help we will make this transition as smooth as possible.”

With the acquisition, Wyatt-Johnson will now be able to offer such quality Toyota vehicles such as the Toyota Camry (the top-selling car in the U.S. for the past nine years), the Prius (the best-selling hybrid vehicle in the world), as well as Toyota trucks and SUVs such as the Tacoma, the Tundra, and the FJ Cruiser.

“Although there are plenty of expansion opportunities nationwide, we are happy to be investing in another Clarksville area business,” said Cannata. “Clarksville’s new vehicle sales are up 19% over 2010 and has proven time and time again to be a stable growing market and we are pleased to be able to expand in this wonderful city.”

Market Commentary by Scott J. Brown, Ph.D., Chief Economist

Scott J. Brown Ph.D., Chief Economist Raymond James Investment Services

The economic data were mixed, but remained consistent with moderate growth in the near term. Consumer confidence fell in January. Motor vehicle sales picked up. Home prices were still falling in November. Construction spending improved in December (likely reflecting mild weather). The January Employment Report was stronger than expected, helped by mild weather. Nonfarm payrolls rose by 243,000 and the two previous months were revised a net 60,000 higher (note that payrolls fell by 2.689 million in January before seasonal adjustment).

The unemployment rate fell to 8.3%, from 8.5% in December and 9.1% a year ago, due largely to a drop in labor force participation. The employment/population ratio held steady at 58.5%, little changed over the last two years. The Household Survey results noted that 206,000 people were not able to work during the January survey period due to adverse weather, vs. a 425,000 average over the last five Januarys (this figure is not directly comparable to the payroll numbers, but it gives you an idea of the magnitude of the weather impact).

In his testimony to the House Budget Committee, Fed Chairman Bernanke noted that the recovery has been “frustratingly slow” and remains vulnerable to shocks. He said “the outlook remains uncertain” and needs to be monitored closely. Bernanke said that the federal budget deficit will decrease as the economy recovers and tax revenues rebound. However, even after economic conditions return to normal, “the nation will still face a sizeable structural budget gap.” And then, even if discretionary spending were cut to zero, we would still have a deficit. When asked if the Fed’s dual targeting system implied that the Fed would tolerate higher inflation in the short term in order to push unemployment lower, Bernanke said that the Fed will not seek to raise inflation.

Next week, the economic calendar thins out considerably. Bernanke testifies on Tuesday, but this is expected to be a repeat of what he gave the House Budget Committee. The markets typically don’t pay much attention to the monthly trade data, but the December figures have some implications for GDP revisions.

Important Disclosures

Past performance is not a guarantee of future results. There are special risks involved with global investing related to market and currency fluctuations, economic and political instability, and different financial accounting standards. The above material has been obtained from sources considered reliable, but we do not guarantee that it is accurate or complete. There is no assurance that any trends mentioned will continue in the future. While interest on municipal bonds is generally exempt from federal income tax, it may be subject to the federal alternative minimum tax, state or local taxes. In addition, certain municipal bonds (such as Build America Bonds) are issued without a federal tax exemption, which subjects the related interest income to federal income tax. Investing involves risk and investors may incur a profit or a loss.

US government bonds and treasury bills are guaranteed by the US government and, if held to maturity, offer a fixed rate of return and guaranteed principal value. US government bonds are issued and guaranteed as to the timely payment of principal and interest by the federal government. Treasury bills are certificates reflecting short-term (less than one year) obligations of the US government.

Commodities trading is generally considered speculative because of the significant potential for investment loss. Markets for commodities are likely to be volatile and there may be sharp price fluctuations even during periods when prices overall are rising. Specific sector investing can be subject to different and greater risks than more diversified investments.

Tax Equiv Muni yields (TEY) assume a 35% tax rate on triple-A rated, tax-exempt insured revenue bonds.

The VIP guests and assembled shoppers were welcomed to the new store by Manager Norman Rubio, who has been with the chain for over twenty years. He got his start bagging groceries and worked his way up the chain until he was managing stores in the Atlanta market. He also was part of the team that opening the first Publix store in Tennessee 9 years ago in Hermitage Tennessee. “This is as exciting (opening the store in Hermitage), if not more so; coming to Clarksville as a new market. We have been so well received; you have welcomed us with open arms,” he said.

Rubio takes his commitment to his customers very seriously, “I look forward to serving the community along with my team and staff…My office is out here on the sales floor along with my staff. Approach me, ask me questions, I’ll serve you as best I can.
After Rubio finished speaking Montgomery County Mayor Carolyn Bowers addressed the crowd, “This is the first day of the first Publix in Clarksville, Tennessee and that is something that we should all be excited about. Yesterday Publix committed to being a part of our community and serving our community by presenting two $1,000 checks, one to United Way, and one to the Clarksville-Montgomery County Education Foundation. That is a great way to start supporting our community. We know that the Publix Corporation is fantastic company for their employees, our citizens, and our community. It’s owned by their employees and they are really committed to serving their customers and our community. We are so excited about the quality of their merchandise and their service. We are really excited to have them as a partner in our community. It wasn’t too long ago; June 2010 were we were breaking ground, and here today we are opening the store. So congratulations Publix we welcome you!”

Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan addresses the crowd

She was followed by Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan. Mayor McMillan started off addressing the people who braved the early morning hours to be at the front of the line to get in the new store, “I am happy about these first 25 people, I know you were here early to be the first 25 people in line. That’s right!” She then joked about both her and Mayor Bowers wearing “Publix green” jackets, “This is how excited Mayor Bowers and I are, we thought that we were not coming to cut the ribbon but to come to work, so we kinda dressed like everybody else! I think after this is over we can go over there and start working, and they would welcome us because that is how Publix is.”

She then spoke about how proud Clarksville was to have Publix choose to come to our community, “We are so excited to have this store here in this community. In addition to the checks that you already heard, they also gave $1,000 to Big Brothers, Big Sisters. I think what that shows is their commitment to this community. Their employees are here, they are all smiling, and ready to go to work. I am truly excited for the citizens of Clarksville to have this opportunity here with this wonderful corporate citizen. So welcome thank you for coming, thank you for being a part of our community! Thank you!”

Then it was time for the ribbon cutting. Rubio cut the ribbon after having the crowd join him in a countdown from 5. Then the audience broke into cheers and applause.

Shopping in the produce section

After the ribbon cutting the store was open to the public and crowds eagerly dispersed through the store. “We have here a great variety of fresh products and private label products that we wish for you to enjoy and purchase.” said Rubio. Among the unique features are the Bakery which bakes fresh breads and desserts in house; the full-service deli which provides a variety of Boar’s Head meats and cheeses, along with Rotisserie and fried chicken; the International Food section; fresh seafood; and an in house butcher shop. The shopping center has the usual variety of groceries that any supermarket in the world would have with an open and airy presentation.

Brenda Burkhardt, was the second person in line to get into the store. She said, “I have been looking forward to Publix coming to Clarksville for a long time. I used to go to the one in Nashville every once in a while but not very often because it was so far away. I liked their food and their generics are fantastic. I love their glass cleaner! Their meats are also excellent, they have very good meats here.”

Brenda Burkhardt checking out

Rev. Jimmy Terry from Tabernacle Baptist Church was on hand at the opening. He feels that the new store is a great boost for the community, “It says something about the growth of Clarksville that they came here with all the other markets that we already had, and they came here with all this, and then are already planning to build another one it says something about the Clarksville Community. Not to mention, competition is great!” They have been looking forward to the opening, “My wife and I have been looking forward to the store’s arrival since they announced it.”

Phyllis Fox was attending her first grand opening, “The store is beautiful, everything looks wonderfully delicious. The fruit is really fresh looking, and I can’t wait to get some good bread, their Whole Wheat breads.” She loves the fact that the store stocks a selection of raw nuts and sunflower seeds, and hopes they will consider adding pumpkin seeds to their selection.

City Council member Geno Grubbs was among the City Council members on hand at the opening, “I think this store is just beautiful, and it will be a great asset to the community. I mean look at how crowded this store is at 7:00am, it’s packed! With the great service and the wonderful staff that Publix has, this will be a great place to shop.”

Planters Bank

Owner: Elizabeth McCoy is the CEO.

Tell us about your business: Planters Bank offers five full-service branches and a mortgage office in the Clarksville area, plus another three full-service branches in Hopkinsville. We deliver a full range of products and services that provide timely solutions to consumer and business financial needs and opportunities.

What products/services do you offer to your customers: We offer a full gamut of financial products and services including checking, savings, CD’s, and money market accounts, trust and cash management services, and loans.

How long you have been open: Planters celebrated its 15-year anniversary in 2011.

Why did you open downtown?

From the beginning of its days in Hopkinsville, the founders of the bank always had plans to locate in Clarksville. Downtown, the financial center of Clarksville-Montgomery County, was simply the obvious place to start.

The emphasis on rebuilding downtown after the tornado provided the perfect opportunity from a timing standpoint. So, we were one of the first businesses to commit to build after that event, and one of the first to open anew in the post-tornado downtown Clarksville.

Most challenging part of being downtown?

We are a block or so off of the highest-traffic roads, so visibility has been a bit of a challenge. The 100 block of Franklin Street has been promoted as “Clarksville’s historic downtown,” but that’s much more to the downtown landscape beyond that single block.

Most rewarding part of being downtown?

Unlike our suburban branches, our downtown branch experiences a fair amount of pedestrian traffic from neighboring businesses. The physical proximity to a variety of other retail and service organizations makes a downtown location a rewarding experience. As well, employees have the opportunity to walk, visit customers and prospects, shop and dine, without having to drive.

Favorite part of being part of the downtown business community:

We love being involved opportunities and events that promote and create awareness for downtown Clarksville. It is the heart of our community and we hope it always will be. Many of our employees are native Clarksvillians, or spent our “growing up years” here and have wonderful memories of downtown retail, entertainment and events from decades past.

We’re thrilled to be part of the resurgence of that quality atmosphere so that our children can have those same types of experiences and memories.

Market Commentary by Scott J. Brown, Ph.D., Chief Economist

Scott J. Brown Ph.D., Chief Economist Raymond James Investment Services

The Federal Open Market Committee left short-term interest rates unchanged and did not embark on another round of asset purchases. No surprise there. However, the FOMC lengthened the period it expects to keep rates exceptionally low: the FOMC “currently anticipates that economic conditions – including low rates of resource utilization and a subdued outlook for inflation over the medium run – are likely to warrant exceptionally low levels for the federal funds rate at least through late 2014” (vs. the previous “through mid-2013”).

Keeping to its dual mandate (price stability and maximum sustainable employment) the Fed adopted an explicit inflation target (inflation in the PCE Price Index at 2% per year) and a soft target for employment (currently, an unemployment rate between 5.2% and 6.0%). In the post-meeting press briefing, Chairman Bernanke said that officials were still debating whether to increase the Fed’s asset purchases.

The economic data were mixed . Real GDP rose at a 2.8% annual rate in the advance estimate for 4Q11 – not far from expectations (+3.0%), but two-thirds of that was in inventories. Consumer spending rose at a moderate 2.0% annual rate, but business fixed investment advanced at a meager 1.7% pace (vs. +15.7% in 3Q11). Durable goods orders exceeded expectations in December, boosted by a further increase in aircraft orders – ex-transportation, orders were mixed across industries. New home sales disappointed, edging down in December. The dovish Fed stance pushed bond yields back down and weakened the dollar, but generated some confusion for the equity markets, as investors pondered why the Fed needed to extend the expected period of low short-term interest rates.

Next week, the January economic data will start to flow in. The focus should be on the Employment Report. Seasonal adjustment will be an important factor (as the economy typically loses more than 2.5 million jobs prior to adjustment). December’s increase in delivery personnel (up 42,200 after seasonal adjustment) should unwind in January. Note that the payroll figures will incorporate annual benchmark revisions, which are expected to lift the March 2011 level of payrolls by about 192,000 (or +0.1%).

Market Commentary by Scott J. Brown, Ph.D., Chief Economist

<img class="size-thumbnail wp-image-35840 " title="Scott J. Brown Ph.D., Chief Economist Raymond James Investment Services" src="http://www.clarksvilleonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/scottjbrown-159x200.jpg" alt="Scott J.
The data remained consistent with moderate economic growth in the near term. Industrial production rose 0.4% in December, but was held back by a 2.7% decline in the output of utilities (a function of moderate temperatures) – manufacturing output rose 0.9%, partly reflecting a rebound from a soft November. Residential construction figures were mixed, with an improving trend in single-family housing starts and building permits, but softness in the multi-family sector (which is volatile).

Note that seasonal adjustment may have exaggerated the impact of mild weather. The Consumer Price Index was unchanged for a second consecutive month in December, up 3.0% year-over-year (vs. +1.5% in 2010). Ex-food & energy, the CPI rose 0.1%, up 2.2% in 2011 (vs. a historic low of +0.8% in 2010).

Next week, the focus is expected to be on the Fed policy statement and Chairman Bernanke’s press briefing. However, Friday’s GDP estimate has some market-moving potential. The Fed is expected to leave monetary policy unchanged. A number of Fed officials have spoken in recent months about the possibility of another round of asset purchases, which would be made more effective by enhanced communications from the Fed. We’re about to get such enhancements. In addition to releasing the four-times-per-year projections of GDP growth, unemployment, and inflation, the Fed will begin publishing its forecasts of the federal funds rate target.

There’s always a lot of uncertainty in the advance GDP estimate. Investors should focus on the key components (consumer spending and business fixed investment) and the story behind those components. However, market participants rarely look behind the headline figure, which will be revised in February, and again in March, and again in July when annual benchmark revisions are incorporated. GDP growth is expected to have been moderately strong in 4Q11 (somewhere between 2.5% and 3.5%).

The official ribbon cutting will happen at 6:45am on February 1st. The new shopping center is the first large scale development in the Madison Street Overlay Zone that incorporates all the efforts to blend good looks, lighting, signage, landscape, walkways and other features into one business package.

While Publix was looking to build a class operation from the start, there have been a couple of work sessions to iron out some concerns to meet the Overlay requirements. I am pleased to say these were worked out to everyone’s satisfaction.

This should be a good example for Clarksville to incorporate new guidelines into future commercial/business development across the city. There has also been a battle on the council to keep whole residential housing neighborhoods by the new shopping center to promote walking and biking development.

We talk about walkable and visually desirable residential and commercial development being built and located by each other and then seem to undo that ideal by installing business and commercial zoning into neighborhoods and pushing residents and neighbors further out. Businesses do look at residential “rooftop” counts around their proposed building locations. The more folks that live in an area the more likely they will shop in that area.

You will also note that a new right turn lane on Memorial Drive onto Madison Street by the Publix development will aid traffic at that intersection.
