Clarksville-Montgomery County Public LibraryClarksville, TN – Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Library was transformed to look like The Wizarding World of Harry Potter last Thursday as more than 1,000 guests were expected to come out for Harry Potter Book Night.

Children’s Library Assistant Joanna Katz was dressed in a replica of Hermione’s Jewel Ball dress from the fourth movie. Many library employees as well as local children and their parents also joined in the fun, portraying characters from Hagrid to Harry Potter.

Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Library hosted its 4th Annual Harry Potter Book Night Thursday.

“This is our 4th annual Harry Potter event,” Katz said. “It gets bigger every year. Last year we had more than 1,000 people attend. The event is library-wide and everybody gets involved. This year, we’ve added a couple of new things, like our Sorting Hat Ceremony, and we’ve brought back some things from the past like the Dueling Club.”

As part of a worldwide celebration of J. K. Rowling’s book series, local muggles, witches, and wizards of all ages joined in the fun as areas throughout the library were transformed into Hogwarts, Diagon Alley, and Hogsmeade.

Guests began the evening by selecting a wand, they then enjoyed experiments in Potions Class, had their tea leaves read in Divination, and much more.

“We have crafts, wands, bingo, a live-animal demonstration, and a scavenger hunt,” Katz said. “And it’s not just us, this is a world-wide event sponsored by Bloomsbury, and Scholastic Publishing. Libraries all over the world now host an event like this each year, on the first Thursday in February.”

This year’s scavenger hunt played on the theme Fantastic Beasts. Participants had to search the building for clues to catch all the magical creatures that were loose in the library.

At the Sorting Hat Ceremony, new this year, witches and wizards were sorted into their appropriate Hogwarts houses. A trivia contest and other games awarded points to members of the different teams and at the end of the night, points were totaled and the winning house was announced.

Live-animal Care of Magical Creatures Classes at 5:30pm and 6:30pm were also very popular. The classes were taught by Brad Reynolds of Real Science, and featured a variety of animals.

“I’m excited that we are able to provide something like this, something that appeals to the whole family,” Katz said. “There is something for people of all ages here tonight. In addition to all the fun and games, we will also be screening the movie Fantastic Beasts and where to Find Them.”
