Austin Peay State University - APSUClarksville, TNAustin Peay State University music performance graduate student Emmanuel Mejeun’s dedication to helping other students succeed in the classroom was recently recognized as he received Certified Learning Center Professional – Level 2 certification through the National College Learning Center Association (NCLCA).

Level 2 represents a high level of certification, and indicates, among other criteria, a bachelor’s degree, at least 3-5 years of experience of post-secondary learning assistance and completion of at least two criteria, including graduate coursework, at least two professional presentations at the local, regional or national level on learning support topics, participation in committee work or attendance at one or more learning assistance national conferences.

This advanced certification is a validation of the work Mejeun, a native of Haiti, has done with the Academic Support Center at APSU, where he currently serves as a graduate research assistant, tutoring students, aiding in student retention and serving as interim academic alert coordinator.

“My mom is a teacher, and I’ve always known that I wanted to be in education and I see my work in the learning center as another part of being an educator,” Mejeun said. “I am able to provide support for students; education is my passion, and I see the Academic Support Center as a way to help students reach their optimal potential.”

Level 2 certification generally corresponds with a professional who is working at the coordinator level or seeking a position at the director level. In 2016, 40 people received Level 2 certification nationally, with almost all certified members serving in full-time professional staff or faculty positions.

The NCLCA is a national organization that supports learning center professionals in developing and enhancing their efforts at the post-secondary level. For Mejeun, this advanced level of certification is another step toward his ultimate goal of teaching at the college level.

“After I finish my master’s degree, I’m going to pursue a doctorate and, eventually, I aspire to be a college professor,” Mejeun said. “This certification shows that I have worked my way up from the bottom as a tutor, and it shows that I understand and have experience with the ways students struggle in the classroom.

“Because I have achieved this certification, I can demonstrate that I know students’ trouble spots and how to work to solve them, and that will only help me in my future as a professor.”

Since 2001, the Center has served thousands of students a year, offering a number of services to both APSU students and members of the community, including peer tutoring, community tutoring, technology assistance and a writing center. The Center also employs both APSU undergraduate and graduate students as tutors to support its clients in meeting their educational goals.
