“On this important day in the University’s history, the City of Clarksville and all her citizens join with the University in honoring its remarkable legacy,” Mayor McMillan said in the proclamation, which was presented as University officials  and community leaders gathered on campus for a birthday ceremony.

APSU President Alisa White and Evans Harvill, a retired Clarksville attorney whose father was an early president of the school, planted an oak tree in front of Browning Hall to mark the occasion.

Here is the City of Clarksville proclamation:

WHEREAS, the seeds of educational excellence took root on the banks of the Cumberland, and the school grew into Austin Peay State College in 1943 and then Austin Peay State University in 1967; and

WHEREAS, APSU, now a comprehensive university with more than 10,000 students, offers some 40 undergraduate programs in its six colleges: Arts and Letters, Behavioral Health Sciences, Business, Education, Science and Mathematics; and the College of Graduate Studies, which oversees more than 20 programs; and

WHEREAS, over the course of 90 years, APSU has provided life-changing educational opportunities to many first-generation college and nontraditional college students and military veterans, creating untold amounts of human success, happiness, and fulfilment.

WHEREAS, on this important day in the University’s history, the City of Clarksville and all her citizens join with the University in honoring its remarkable legacy.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Kim McMillan, Mayor of Clarksville, Tennessee, do hereby proclaim, Wednesday, April 26, 2017, as a day to celebrate 90 years of growth, excellence and achievement at Austin Peay State University and urge the residents of our City, and communities across Tennessee,  to celebrate its  exceptional past and present leaders, faculty, staff, students and alumni.
