Clarksville Police Department - CPDClarksville, TN – The Clarksville Police Department hosted a 5k Run/Walk on Saturday, May 9th at the Clarksville Police Department Headquarters located at 135 Commerce Street. The entry fee was $25.00 and included a t-shirt. Kids 10 & under was $10.00 (did not include a shirt).

“I wanted to hold a community participation event,” stated CPD Captain Scott Thornton. “It will be timed with a digital clock, but it’s more about the community coming out and competing with the police in an event together.”

Registration race day was until 8:45am. The race began at 9:00am with 102 people participating in the event. Participants began at the Clarksville Police Department and the race ended near the Emergency Services Center.

When asked what he thought about today’s event, Clarksville Police Chief Al Ansley replied, “It’s fantastic. It’s our first one. It kicks off National Police Memorial week. It was Capt. Thornton’s idea. He came to me a couple of months ago and we thought it was a good idea. It was a good turn out today and we appreciate everyone who came out.”

The event was also a show of support for C.O.P.S. (Concerns of Police Survivors). For each entry fee of $25.00, $8.50 went to buying the t-shirt and the rest of the money went to C.O.P.S. to benefit the families of loved ones killed in the line of duty.

“Everyone running today is showing their support for families of officers killed in the line of duty. The money raised helps survivors go to police week, helps with scholarships, counseling and other needs of the family,” said Trina Scott, Immediate Past President of Middle and Eastern TN C.O.P.S. Chapter.

Money raised to day will help take three families to Washington D.C. for National Police Week.

Each year, between 140 and 160 officers are killed in the line of duty and their families and co-workers are left to cope with the tragic loss. C.O.P.S. provides resources to help them rebuild their shattered lives.
