Clarksville’s Dunbar Cave State Park plays host to Cooling at the Cave

By | July 30, 2014 | Email This Post Print This Post

Dunbar Cave State Park - Clarksville TNClarksville, TN – Another successful Cooling at the Cave was held Saturday July 26th. As in the old days, everyone gathered around the cave’s entrance to listen to the music and to let the constant cool breeze blowing from the mouth of the cave cool them off. Before air conditioning, locals gathered at the cave to cool off and have fellowship with others.

The entertainment this year was again provided by the extremely popular Cumberland Wind Jazz Project. They played big band music from the 1930′s to 1960′s. Several events goers took to the dance floor and enjoyed themselves greatly.

“I love Dunbar Cave. I have a lot of memories about Dunbar Cave like the swimming pool and the dances at the mouth of the cave. So it just kinda brings back a lot of that today being here,” said Montgomery County Mayor Carolyn Bowers. “It’s so nice to see the band playing here and everybody coming out to enjoy it.”

There were home made baked goodies and drinks available. Several tables were setup where friends and family played different types of board games as well as cards. One group had a competitive game of chess going.

“They played some great music and the feel of the wonderful breeze coming from Dunbar Cave nice. I am a member of the Friends of Dunbar Cave. We had a greet time out here,” stated Montgomery County Trustee Brenda Radford.

The Friends of Dunbar Cave added a silent auction to the event this year, which went over very well. The items included everything from picnic baskets to local art depicting Dunbar Cave. The City of Clarksville and Golf Pro Jeff Vaughn donated the use of a Golf Cart from the Swan Lake Golf Course to ferry people from the parking lot to the cave entrance. Bill Larson with Clarksville Online drove the cart as he does each year.
