City of Clarksville brings free 90 minute parking to Downtown Clarksville
Clarksville, TN – Beginning on May 1st, 2012 and running through the end of June 2012, the City of Clarksville will offer free parking for 90 minutes on some downtown streets.
The 90 minute parking areas will be located on the 100 block of Franklin Street, Strawberry Alley and portions of Second Street.
Parking areas which fall into the trial program will be clearly marked with a green canvas bag. Meters or other areas not clearly designated with the canvas bags are not included in the 90 minute free parking trial will receive citations for any parking violations.
“It’s important to note that the new system will allow 90 minutes of free parking per day for each vehicle. The software the City uses to regulate parking identifies cars by their tag numbers. If a person parks in a 90 minute free designated spot and leaves after only 30 minutes, he or she has exhausted their full 90 minutes of allotted free parking time. For the same reason, moving a vehicle from one designated parking place to a different parking place on the same block will still result in a traffic citation,” Mr. Smith explained.
The hours of enforcement for parking are 8:00am to 5:00pm. Parking is currently, and will continue to be, free on nights (after 5:00pm), holidays and weekends.
“I’ve promised to do what I can to encourage growth in the downtown area for businesses and residents. We began by adding more parking spaces where we could and changing red lights to 4-way stops. These changes have improved traffic flow through the area. The free 90 minute parking trial is another way to encourage people to shop, dine and visit the downtown area. I appreciate our Parking Authority and the Two Rivers Company for implementing the trial and I look forward to reviewing the results at the end of June,” said Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan.
